Aunty Arenal Lodge

The best time to visit is February through April, when rain is least frequent and temperatures are warmest, with highs around 28-29°C. May and June are also pleasant, though rain increases. The rainiest stretch is July through December, with nearly daily showers and high humidity. Visit in the dry months for clearer views of Arenal Volcano and easier hiking.

Stay near the town center for easy access to restaurants, the central park, and local tours; it suits first-time visitors. The road toward Arenal Volcano, west of town, is quieter and closer to the national park and hot springs, ideal for nature-focused stays. The area around Palma, near the volcano, offers a more remote, rainforest setting. Featured hotels like Nayara Gardens and Hotel El Silencio del Campo are along the volcano road, while SUWA VILLA ARENAL is in the center.

Start with the Arenal Volcano National Park to see the volcano and its lava fields. The Fortuna Waterfall is a stunning 70-meter cascade you can swim beneath. Mistico Park's hanging bridges offer a walk through the rainforest canopy. Sky Adventures has aerial trams and zip lines for forest views. Kalambu Hot Springs is a relaxing spot after a day of hiking.

You can take a full-day boat safari to Caño Negro, a wetland reserve known for its wildlife like monkeys, sloths, and birds. Other full-day tours combine the Arenal Volcano, hanging bridges, and La Fortuna Waterfall, but those cover the city's own sights rather than a separate destination. For a classic day trip, many visitors also head to the nearby town of Monteverde for its cloud forest reserves.

Plan 3 days in La Fortuna. Day one for Arenal Volcano National Park and Mistico Park hanging bridges. Day two for Fortuna Waterfall and Kalambu Hot Springs. Day three for Sky Adventures and Bogarin Trail. If you want to add the Caño Negro wildlife boat safari, plan a fourth day.
