The best time to visit Lijiang is from March to May and September to November, when days are mild and rain is less frequent. June through August is the rainiest stretch, with nearly daily showers and high humidity, though temperatures stay pleasant. Winters are dry and sunny but cold at night, with daytime highs around 14-15°C. The Naxi people's Torch Festival in late July is a well-known celebration, but it falls in the wet season.
Stay in the Old Town of Lijiang for the classic maze of canals and Naxi architecture, ideal for first-timers. Shuhe Ancient Town, a quieter neighbor, suits those wanting a more relaxed base. For easy access to the old town's sights, the area around Qiyi Street and South Gate offers convenience. The Bivou Lijiang and Holiday Inn resort are in Shuhe, while Jun Bo Boutique Guesthouse and ANYU Hotel are near the old town's south gate.

If you prefer staying closer, a day trip to the Old Town of Lijiang itself is a common option, though it is the main city sight.
