The best time to visit is April through June, when days are warm (24-28°C) and rain is rare. September and October are also pleasant, with highs around 27-30°C and few rain days. July and August are the hottest, often reaching 31-32°C, while December through March brings the most rain, especially March with 8 rain days. For the driest, most comfortable weather, aim for late spring or early fall.
For first-timers, stay in Hollywood or West Hollywood for easy access to sights and nightlife. Beverly Hills suits those wanting upscale shopping and dining, with hotels like the Beverly Wilshire and The Peninsula. Downtown Los Angeles is great for museums, the arts district, and sports venues, with options like The Ritz-Carlton and InterContinental. Koreatown offers a lively, central base with a local feel, including The Line Hotel.
Universal Studios Hollywood is a top pick for its movie-themed rides and behind-the-scenes studio tour. Santa Monica Pier offers classic beachside fun with its iconic Ferris wheel and ocean views. Griffith Park and its observatory provide sweeping city views and hiking trails, while the Hollywood Sign is a must for its iconic photo op. The Getty impresses with its art collection and gardens, and LACMA is a major art museum with its famous Urban Light installation.
The full-day tours from Los Angeles cover the city itself, including Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and the beaches, so they are not day trips to other places. Well-known day trips from LA include Santa Catalina Island, with its coastal charm and outdoor activities, and Joshua Tree National Park, known for its striking desert landscapes and rock formations. Another classic option is a trip to the nearby wine country of Santa Barbara, offering a relaxed coastal atmosphere. These are all reachable within a day, but you will need to plan for a full day out.
Plan 4 to 5 days. In 3 days, you can cover the essentials: Universal Studios Hollywood, Santa Monica Pier, Griffith Park and the Observatory, and the Hollywood Sign. Add a fourth day for The Getty and LACMA, and a fifth if you want a day trip, which needs an extra day beyond the core sightseeing.
