The best time to visit Madrid is May, June, or September, when days are warm (25-30°C) and rain is light, with humidity around 50% or lower. May also brings the lively San Isidro festival, the city's patron saint celebration. July and August are the hottest stretch, with daytime highs near 35°C and almost no rain, though the dry air keeps it manageable. March and October are the rainiest months, with the most rainy days, so plan around those if you prefer dry weather.
Stay in the City Center for the Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor, and nightlife; it suits first-timers and walkers. The Retiro district is calm and green, good for families, with easy access to the park and museums. Salamanca is upscale and refined, ideal for shopping and elegant dining. Consider hotels like CoolRooms Palacio de Atocha in City Center or Only YOU Hotel Atocha in Retiro.
Start with El Retiro Park, a vast green escape with the Palacio de Cristal and the Great Pond. See the Royal Palace for its grand rooms and Plaza Mayor for the historic arcaded square. The Museo Nacional del Prado is essential for its masterpieces. End with Puerta de Alcalá, a landmark gate, and Temple of Debod for its ancient Egyptian temple and views.
From Madrid, full-day tours head to Segovia, with its Roman aqueduct and fairytale castle, and Avila, known for its preserved medieval walls. Toledo, a historic hilltop city with a grand cathedral and old Jewish quarter, is another tour option. The wineries tour explores the Madrid countryside, while the zoo is a city attraction rather than a day trip.
Plan 3 to 4 days: two days for the main sights (El Retiro Park, Plaza Mayor, Prado Museum, Royal Palace), one for the Temple of Debod and Puerta de Alcalá, and an extra day if you add a full-day trip to Segovia, Avila, or Toledo.
