My wife and I stayed in this beautiful and historic hotel for our anniversary trip to Japan. We opted to stay in a traditional tatami room and absolutely loved it. We were in walking distance of many chic cafe options, Matsumoto Castle and the downtown district. Our room felt traditional and historic, and still had modern amenities. We were comfortable and well served during our stay. My wife and I definitely recommend the Hotel Kagetsu for anyone wanting to stay in Matsumoto.

We were going back and forth between a 4 or 5 star. We had a tatami room which was clean and spacious but was quite dated and well worn (scuffs on the walls, 90s decor etc). The breakfast was amazing though - lots of choices and high quality ingredients. The service at the hotel was good- walking into the lobby you feel like you're at a 5 star hotel. The public baths were also nice. We also appreciated the in-house laundry mat.

Very overpriced hotel for what it offers. The rooms were worn and the equipment and furnishings were outdated. We decided not to use the wardrobe because of how unpleasant and shabby it looked inside. Perhaps we made a mistake by choosing a Japanese-style room, as the Western-style rooms looked much better.

The staff in the hotel are really nice and helpful. The room we received was dusty, but after kindly asking the reception, they sent someone to clean again. The onsen was also very nice and the breakfast had an option for everyone.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at this historic hotel. We received very good service. My room was exceptionally spacious and featured a traditional tatami style, which I personally love for its authentic atmosphere. The location is unbeatable, situated just a short walk from the historic Matsumoto Castle, making sightseeing incredibly convenient. One of the highlights was the large communal bath (Sento); being supplied by a natural spring on-site, it was the perfect way to unwind after a long day of exploring. We also had a wonderful dining experience, enjoying both breakfast and dinner at the onsite restaurant. The food was delicious and well worth it. Overall, this hotel offers excellent value, and I highly recommend it to anyone visiting the area!

Good location - quiet but not far from anywhere and nice have the onsite onsen. Breakfast is good - more Japanese themed than some. It’s quite tight and busy so you need to be patient. Service is quiet and effective. The rooms are a bit dated but comfortable

Unfortunately this hotel is severely let down by the stink of the rooms, particularly the bathrooms. It was so bad in the shower room that we couldn’t even shower in the morning. The rooms were somewhat dark but fairly spacious. Service was good though the welcome drinks and breakfast felt very modest to what we’ve been used to. The location is perfect, close to so many restaurants and the castle.

Response from the property

Thank you very much for staying with Matsumoto Hotel Kagetsu and for taking the time to share your feedback. We sincerely apologize for the unpleasant odor in your room, especially in the bathroom, which prevented you from even using the shower in the morning. This is certainly not the experience we wish to provide, and we take your comments very seriously. We are currently rechecking our drainage systems and ventilation, and reviewing our cleaning and maintenance procedures to prevent this from happening again. Regarding the bathrooms in the main building, we are also in ongoing discussions with our contractors to carry out renovations and repairs step by step. While it may take some time to complete all improvements, we are committed to making steady progress. We truly appreciate your kind words about our location and staff. As for the breakfast and welcome drinks, we aim to reflect the character of Shinshu, and we will continue refining them to better meet our guests’ expectations. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you again and provide you with a much more comfortable stay. Thank you again for your valuable feedback.

It was a cool hotel and in a great spot, very close to the castle and the main streets. My only issue was the bathroom…. My room was in the annex building and had the shower above an old-fashioned free standing bathtub, which was very awkward. The tub also wobbled when you were standing on it, making it feel like you could suddenly fall. It was a strange design. Other than that, service was great 👍🏻

Response from the property

Thank you very much for staying with us at Matsumoto Hotel Kagetsu and for sharing your kind and detailed review. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed our location, with its close proximity to Matsumoto Castle and the main streets, as well as our service. Your warm comments are truly appreciated by our entire team. At the same time, we sincerely apologize for the discomfort you experienced with the bathroom in your room. The annex building preserves the character of a traditional structure, and some rooms feature a clawfoot-style bathtub installed during renovations around ten years ago. While this design reflects the atmosphere of the building, we regret that it felt unstable and inconvenient during your stay. Your feedback regarding safety and usability is very important to us, and we will carefully review this matter moving forward. We will continue our efforts to improve comfort and safety while preserving the unique character of our property, and also strive to provide clearer information in advance so guests can choose a room that best suits their preferences. We truly appreciate your kind words about our service, and we hope to welcome you again on your next visit to Matsumoto. Thank you very much for your review.
