Amazing experience from the moment I pulled up until I begrudgingly had to be on my way. The service was amazing, anticipating my every need. The food was delicious. The rooms were spacious. I booked one with my own private onsen. However, I used them all because they were incredible!!! And finally, the grounds. I took a walk along the creek and it was breathtaking. I will be back!!

Wonderful onsen hotel in the countryside near Matsumoto. Easy to get to from Tokyo via train and hotel shuttle. We stayed 2 nights which was perfect. Room was comfortable, food delicious (although Western breakfast was odd) - we recommned asking for the shabu shabu hotpot one night for a change - (Wang is an exceptional hostess in the restaurant. The 3 onsens are breathtaking. No language issues. The hotel shuttle provides easy access to Matsumoto for castle, Yayoi Kusama etc. Highly recommended

Everything about this place was amazing. The hospitality was beyond compare. The food was to die for. They accommodated our group's allergies and the fact that we weren't feeling very well to provide us with a much appreciated menu. The rooms are also unbelievable and the pictures don't do it any justice. But... You can also go fishing here! They will arrange for your fishing license for the day, which cost me 1,000yen. They'll also provide rental fishing gear if needed. The front desk staff gave me a map and pointed me to some places that were good and the stream is literally out the front door of the hotel. I was able to catch a yamame in less than a 2 minute walk. Overall the highlight of our trip.

Amazing!!! Will definitely come back in the future...room rates are pricey but you get what you paid for. Food was like dining in a Michelin star restaurant. They have different types of onsen to suit your needs, from spacious onsen bath to deep bath and bed type bath.

We had a very enjoyable stay at Tobira Onsen Myojinkan. The service levels here are outstanding and truly embodies the concept of Omotenashi. The staff knew the details of our meals and program intimately and anticipated our needs accordingly. Special mention to Mizuho who walked us through our check-in and welcome at the lounge, Hina who brought us to pick vegetables at the farm and I Chang and Miki who attended to us over lunch and dinner. Also the team who prepared the BBQ lunch for us at the Gazebo - I would highly recommend that. It was a wonderful experience. We also tried the sushi-making class and very grateful to head chef Tetsuya Uchiyama and Zhang Qian for giving us such a lovely experience to round off our trip. We had the opportunity to do a hike beside the hotel to Mt. Hachibuse which was amazing and helped to justify the amount of food we ate. We would like to extend our gratitude to the entire team here that took care of us and we would absolutely recommend this place to our friends.

Our stay at Tobira Onsen was truly unforgettable. The hotel is beautiful, but what I loved the most was the view from our room. It was absolutely breathtaking. We could have happily spent the whole day doing nothing, just sitting by the window, looking out at all the lush greenery, listening to the birds and the sound of the river. It was so peaceful and calming, the kind of place that makes you naturally slow down and take everything in. The service was also wonderful. I especially want to thank Ms. Inanami, who welcomed us when we arrived. We did not get to see her before we left, but she very thoughtfully left us a handwritten note and even drew my favorite Pokémon, Snorlax, on it. It was such a sweet surprise and honestly made me so happy. I will definitely keep that note as a special memory from this trip. We were also lucky to meet Ms. Wang, who happened to be from our hometown! She kindly introduced the hotel to us in detail and made us feel even more at home. That was one of the things I appreciated most about Tobira Onsen. It has a very beautiful and traditional Japanese atmosphere, but at the same time it feels open, inclusive, and welcoming to guests from different backgrounds. I also want to thank the restaurant staff, especially the two elderly gentlemen who served us during our meals. They were so hardworking, kind, and attentive. Their care made our dining experience feel even more special. If I ever travel to the Matsumoto area again, I would love to come back to Tobira Onsen Myojinkan. I can already imagine how beautiful it must be in every season, with cherry blossoms in spring, colorful leaves in autumn, and quiet snow in winter. Thank you for giving us such a warm and beautiful memory. This is a place I will always remember fondly.

What a very special place. An oasis of peace and tranquility. Beautiful staff, wonderful onsens and unbelievably good food. What more could you want from life!? The rooms were also beautifully done. Hard to leave.. Special mention of two staff . Iwanami and Kawai Takamura. Thank you both for making our stay even more special!

On the plus side: the location is magical; the ryokan style rooms are large; the three onsens are lovely - the deep bath one is the best; the service is excellent; the Japanese restaurant is first class and beautiful. |On the minus side, our room needed refurbishment as do some of the common areas if Tobira is to retain its Relais & Château status; the French restaurant food is not good enough; there are not a lot of walks available nearby; and, as with many places in Japan, it is surprising that staff still do not have acceptable levels of English in places where international guests are frequent.

Where can I eat near Myojinkan?

The hotel's own Restaurant serves Japanese and French-style meals with locally grown ingredients, and the Cafe and Bar offer lighter options and drinks. For a change of setting, several dining spots are about 13 km away, including 旭鮨, お好み焼き本舗松本店, マンマ・ミーア, and 想雲堂, plus High-Five and 炉苑 at 14 km. The complimentary shuttle to Matsumoto Station, a 35 to 45 minute ride, lets you easily reach Nawate Shopping Street at 11.4 km for more cafés and eateries.

What is the area around Myojinkan like?

Myojinkan sits in the Tobira Onsen hot-spring village, high in the forested mountains at 1,050 meters, with a river stream nearby. The immediate surroundings are serene woodland, ideal for quiet forest walks and enjoying the natural hot springs. The hotel itself has a restaurant, café, and bar, so you can dine on site. For city sights, Matsumoto Castle is about 11.7 km away, and the Utsukushigahara Highland is 5.3 km from the hotel. The area is peaceful and remote, so plan to use the hotel's shuttle or a car to reach Matsumoto's attractions.

How do I get to Myojinkan from the airport or main train station?

From Matsumoto Station, the hotel runs a free shuttle bus that takes 35 to 45 minutes; reserve at least 30 minutes ahead and meet it at the East Exit. The shuttle departs the station at 15:15 and 16:30, and returns from the hotel at 9:30 and 11:00. If you fly into Matsumoto Airport, the hotel can pick you up with a free shuttle, but you must reserve at least 3 days in advance. For other airports like Narita or Haneda, take a train to Matsumoto Station, then use the hotel shuttle. A taxi from the station is also an option, taking about 30 minutes.

What's there to do near Myojinkan in the evening?

In the evening, you can enjoy the hotel's own bar and cafe, along with its restaurant, which serves Japanese kaiseki and organic French cuisine. The surrounding forest and river offer a peaceful setting for a quiet stroll after dinner. For more activity, the hotel's free shuttle can take you to Matsumoto Station, where you can explore the city's evening options. From there, Matsumoto Castle Park is about 11.6 km away, a short trip by taxi or ride-hailing. The hotel's onsen is also a relaxing way to spend your evening.

Is Myojinkan a good base for exploring Matsumoto?

The hotel's free shuttle runs to Matsumoto Station, where you can reach the castle and other city sights. For the highland, a taxi or your own car is the practical way. The hotel's restaurant and bar make a relaxing end to a day out. It works well if you enjoy a quiet base with nature close by, and you plan your trips into town.
