Superbly well trained staff and incredible food! Honestly these two aspects alone can compensate for the relatively small onsen facilities. It is the warmth and attention these staffers bestowed upon us that’s worth every dollar and another visit to this ryokan. So impressed when we just dropped off our bags, and reversing the car, a staff came right out to help direct the traffic. Like woah, the thoughtfulness! We also travel with a toddler and it’s always tricky because you never know if a tardiness on our part at dinner or breakfast would be kindly received. The staff remained unfazed and just really kind and accommodating. Their response was especially felt since we just came from another ryokan with slightly… anyway, but yeah, keep your staff (to the owner of this ryokan)! They are gold! Food AMAZING too from the presentation to flavours! Superb rice and pickled veg! We were blown away by how crisp pickled veg can taste!

It was a memorable and pleasant Ryokan stay for us. It is Zen place even at meal times and we had a good set of meal cook and served with much dedication. Some of the crew here knows simple English and Chinese that helped us to settle in fast. We had very good rest here, not sure if it's the good food or environment, it could be even both.

Response from the property

This Onsen Ryokan was a blissful relief after a few days in Tokyo. The room was enormous with an entry hallway, huge sleeping/living room and separate huge bathroom. The room had a big window and view, a kettle, fridge, tv, Pjs and all amenites, and the most comfortable futon bedding and doona. I got the all inclusive package and the dinner and breakfast was amazing and a highlight of my whole trip to Japan. There were multiple courses all presented in the most incredible way. The female onsen had 3 different baths including an outside one. I had it all to myself which was a luxury. There is also a little deck and Japanses garden where you can soak your tired feet in the hot mineral onsen water. It was easy to get to from the train station. I took the bus from the bus station opposite and paid cash to the bus driver as I exited the bus. When I left I took the bus to the Castle, left my luggage in the lockers, did a free guided tour of the castle and then walked a short way back to the station. Matsumoto is a lovely city to visit and I'm so glad I stayed at this Ryokan.

The location is easy is find. It’s a traditional japanese style ryokan. Even though most of the signs and instructions are in japanese, the service staff took the time to show and explain the facilities and amenities available to us in English. The service staff also took time to explain all the dishes served and the meal was delicious. Would consider to stay in the ryokan again.

I had the pleasure of staying at Oiwakeya Hotel, a beautiful ryokan that exceeded all my expectations. From the moment I arrived, I was enveloped in a sense of tranquility and tradition. The on-site onsen (hot spring) was the perfect way to unwind and relax. The rooms, laid with traditional tatami mats, were spotlessly clean and surprisingly spacious. But what truly made my stay special was the incredible food. The dinner and breakfast included with my stay were nothing short of amazing - fresh, local ingredients crafted into delicious, authentic Japanese dishes.

Beautiful, traditional Japanese ryokan (inn) with friendly, helpful staff. Some speak English well. Breakfast and dinner is included in the plan. The food is exquisitely presented and so many dishes--too many really. Comfortable bedding--futons laid out on the tatami mats. Lovely gardens and perfect hot spring baths-- plus a hot spring foot bath for tired or cold feet! This inn is not in the center of Matsumoto but an easy and short bus (or taxi) ride away. Highly recommended!

Lovely Ryokan experience. We had the local style dinner and breakfasts during our stay and was very delicious and enjoyable there was probably too much food though and was hard to finish everything during the dinners. The private baths they have were fantastic and highly recommended. I did the public baths as well which were also good. They have traditional Yukata to wear around which was also fun.

What a truly incredible experience of the highest quality and food presentation on par with an aspiring Michelin star restaurant.|A 15min taxi ride from Matsumoto station we were greeted by our English speaking host who showed myself and family around the property, the baths, the indoor koi pond, small shop and finally our room. The room was amazing and decorated the true style of a ryokan, but with mini bar, bathroom and separate toilet.|We booked a private bathing session for the early evening that was fed by the hot springs, and featured a large indoor pool and outdoor tub.|The highlight was the evening meal included in the price. This meal was exquisite and displayed in beautiful porcelain. We also sampled the local wine which was great. Our host spoke good English and was able to explain each of the dishes in detail and how we should approach each of them. We left feeling we had been on a culinary journey.|I could not recommend this place more and a great place to experience after seeing the sights of Matsumoto or just a place to relax.|

Where can I eat near Oiwakeya Ryokan?

The ryokan's own restaurant serves traditional multi-course Japanese meals, and its bar offers drinks, so you can eat well on site. For nearby options, a short taxi ride takes you to Okina-do for Japanized Western-style dishes, Mingei restaurants MoriYoshi, Spanish cuisine at Monachuros Kikka, French flavors at Au Crieur de Vin, and Italian at MINORI-Ristorante Italiano. These are all within a short ride from the hotel, giving you a few choices beyond the ryokan's dining room. Since the immediate area is a quiet onsen district, planning to eat at the hotel or taking a quick trip to these restaurants works well.

What is the area around Oiwakeya Ryokan like?

The ryokan sits in the quiet Utsukushigahara Onsen district, a calm, almost rural hot-spring area rather than the city center. Matsumoto Castle Park and the castle are about 2.8 km away, and Nawate Shopping Street is 2.9 km, so those sights need a short bus or taxi ride. The hotel's own restaurant and bar are right there for meals and drinks. For a stroll, Matsumoto Folkcraft Museum is a 10-minute walk from the ryokan. It's a peaceful base for soaking in the onsen and enjoying the garden, with the city's main sights a quick trip away.

How do I get to Oiwakeya Ryokan from the airport or main train station?

From JR Matsumoto Train Station, take the bus for about 20 minutes toward the Utsukushigahara Onsen area, then walk a short distance to the ryokan. A taxi from the station is also a straightforward option, taking roughly 18 to 20 minutes. If you are flying into Shinshu-Matsumoto Airport, a taxi ride of about 33 minutes will bring you directly here. For a smoother trip with luggage, you can arrange a pre-booked transfer or use a ride-hailing service from the station or airport. The ryokan is in the Satoyamabe hot spring district, so the final leg is a short local connection.

What's there to do near Oiwakeya Ryokan in the evening?

In the evening, the ryokan's own bar and restaurant are the main draw, serving traditional multi-course meals and drinks in a quiet onsen setting. The Utsukushigahara Onsen area is a calm retreat, so after dinner you can enjoy the hot-spring baths or the garden. For a change of scene, Matsumoto Castle Park is 2.8 km away, and Nawate Shopping Street is 2.9 km, both reachable by a short bus or taxi ride. The city center offers more evening options, but the ryokan's own facilities keep the evening simple and relaxing.

Is Oiwakeya Ryokan a good base for exploring Matsumoto?

Oiwakeya Ryokan is a good base for exploring Matsumoto, especially if you have a car or use the local bus. Matsumoto Castle and its park are 2.8 km away, a short drive or bus ride, and the Former Kaichi School is the same distance. The Nawate Shopping Street and Matsumoto City Museum are 2.9 km from the hotel. For a closer walk, the Matsumoto Folkcraft Museum is a 10-minute walk away. The Utsukushigahara Highland is 11.2 km, so plan a longer trip for that. The hotel's own restaurant and bar make it easy to relax after a day of sightseeing.
