Somerset on Elizabeth Melbourne

The best time to visit Melbourne is during the drier, milder months of December through March, when temperatures sit in the low to mid 20s and rain is less frequent. February is especially pleasant with only six rain days. Autumn (April and May) is still comfortable, though wetter. The rainiest stretch runs from September to November, with up to 15 rain days in October, and winter (June and July) is cool and damp. For the most reliable weather, plan for summer or early autumn.

Stay in the CBD for easy access to restaurants, shopping, and most sights; it suits first-timers and those who like being central. Southbank, across the Yarra, is good for river views and the arts precinct. East Melbourne offers a quieter, leafy stay near Fitzroy Gardens and the Shrine. St Kilda, by the bay, suits those wanting a beachside vibe with the pier and gardens nearby.

Start at the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, a large green space ideal for a stroll. The Melbourne Skydeck offers sweeping city views from its observation deck. The Shrine of Remembrance is a moving war memorial with architectural significance. Fitzroy Gardens is a peaceful inner-city park, and nearby Kings Domain connects to the gardens. St Kilda Pier is a classic spot for bay views and sunset walks.

Day trips from Melbourne include the Great Ocean Road and the 12 Apostles, a dramatic coastal drive with limestone stacks. Phillip Island offers the nightly penguin parade, where little penguins come ashore. The Yarra Valley is a wine region with cellar doors and distilleries. Puffing Billy is a heritage steam train ride through the Dandenong Ranges, often paired with rainforest walks.

Plan 3 days for the city: one for the Royal Botanic Gardens, Shrine of Remembrance, and Fitzroy Gardens, one for Melbourne Skydeck and Birrarung Marr, and one for St Kilda Pier and its gardens. Add an extra day for a day trip like the Great Ocean Road or Phillip Island, making 4 days total.
