Frequently asked questions about Melbourne

When is the best time to visit Melbourne?

The best time to visit Melbourne is during the drier, milder months of December through March, when temperatures sit in the low to mid 20s and rain is less frequent. February is especially pleasant with only six rain days. Autumn (April and May) is still comfortable, though wetter. The rainiest stretch runs from September to November, with up to 15 rain days in October, and winter (June and July) is cool and damp. For the most reliable weather, plan for summer or early autumn.

Which area should I stay in in Melbourne?

Stay in the CBD for easy access to restaurants, shopping, and most sights; it suits first-timers and those who like being central. Southbank, across the Yarra, is good for river views and the arts precinct. East Melbourne offers a quieter, leafy stay near Fitzroy Gardens and the Shrine. St Kilda, by the bay, suits those wanting a beachside vibe with the pier and gardens nearby.

What are the must-see attractions in Melbourne?

Start at the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, a large green space ideal for a stroll. The Melbourne Skydeck offers sweeping city views from its observation deck. The Shrine of Remembrance is a moving war memorial with architectural significance. Fitzroy Gardens is a peaceful inner-city park, and nearby Kings Domain connects to the gardens. St Kilda Pier is a classic spot for bay views and sunset walks.

What day trips can I take from Melbourne?

Day trips from Melbourne include the Great Ocean Road and the 12 Apostles, a dramatic coastal drive with limestone stacks. Phillip Island offers the nightly penguin parade, where little penguins come ashore. The Yarra Valley is a wine region with cellar doors and distilleries. Puffing Billy is a heritage steam train ride through the Dandenong Ranges, often paired with rainforest walks.

How many days do I need in Melbourne?

Plan 3 days for the city: one for the Royal Botanic Gardens, Shrine of Remembrance, and Fitzroy Gardens, one for Melbourne Skydeck and Birrarung Marr, and one for St Kilda Pier and its gardens. Add an extra day for a day trip like the Great Ocean Road or Phillip Island, making 4 days total.

’m very happy with my stay at this accommodation. The room was clean and comfortable, with fresh bedding, clean towels, and plenty of hot water. Everything I needed for a comfortable stay was provided. A special thank you to Curry at reception, who was extremely helpful and friendly. They kindly looked after our luggage both before and after our stay, which was a great help and very much appreciated. Overall, I had a very pleasant experience and would definitely recommend this accommodation. I would happily stay here again!

I would strongly advise against staying at this property. My room was uninhabitable due to extensive mould growth, creating a serious health hazard. The smell was overwhelming, and visible black patches were present on the walls and ceiling. Staff are rude, deceptive and do not care (as below). I cut my foot badly on their bath/shower entrace - a sharp protruding metal object right as you get in. The specialist has to reoperate to remove the mould inside my wound and could be stuck in my melbourne for weeks of further surgery and blood transfusions

The strongest advantage is definitely the location. The hotel is only a short walk from Southern Cross Station, making arrival from the airport by SkyBus particularly convenient. It is also situated within Melbourne CBD and the Free Tram Zone, with shops, supermarkets, restaurants and many central attractions within easy reach. I was attending a conference at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, and the hotel was conveniently located for travelling to and from the venue. The staff were friendly and helpful, and my room was comfortable enough for a six-night stay. I also appreciated that the hotel allowed me to leave my luggage after check-out, which was very convenient on the day of departure. Considering its central location, the hotel also offered good value for money. The main drawback is that the property is clearly showing its age. Some of the furnishings, corridors, lifts and common areas look dated and would benefit from refurbishment, while maintenance could also be improved in several areas. Soundproofing is not particularly good, so noise from neighbouring rooms and doors closing in the corridor can sometimes be heard. Overall, the hotel is practical, affordable and very well located rather than modern or luxurious. Its convenient location and good value were the main positives of my stay, although some renovation and improved maintenance would considerably enhance the overall experience.

I travel more than probably 99% of people. Going to just give a few notes here devoid of any emotion or bias and you can come to your own conclusions. - Near train station (convenient but you will routinely run into drug addicts outside of hotel) - hotel is advertised as having laundry but they no longer do - no slippers, toothbrush or complementary water provided - cost is relatively expensive but in line with Melbourne CBD - Housekeeping does not clean the room or make bed/replace sheets. Only replaces towels and waste bins - overall cleanliness is more in line with South Eastern Asian standards as opposed to Western. Air filters have not been cleaned presumably in years. - Some sort of small moths / flying insect in room - I’m in a “queen” room which is two twin beds pushed together. One is firm and the other is sagging and nearly broken. BEWARE - Hotel staff with offer a late checkout for a false 5 star review. This is a common practice in South Eastern Asian countries but is considered a dishonest practice in the western world. Personally if you’re in a pinch this hotel is suitable and can get you by. If you have viable alternatives though Id consider weighing the lack of service and attention to detail you will get here versus the price paid. Its a bit less of a hotel and more of a motel or high end hostel.

I left my suitcase in the hotel's cloakroom after checking out, as I had a late-night flight. When I returned in the evening, I discovered that my suitcase was missing and had apparently been taken by another guest. The two front desk staff members were absolutely amazing! They immediately checked the CCTV footage, tracked down the guest who had taken my suitcase, and made every effort to help me recover it. Throughout the whole process, they were incredibly patient, responsible, and genuinely concerned about my situation. Thanks to their quick response and dedication, I managed to get my luggage back in time for my flight. What could have been a terrible experience turned into a memorable example of excellent customer service. I'm truly grateful to both of them for their kindness, professionalism, and exceptional sense of responsibility. They truly deserve recognition for their outstanding service. A huge thank you to both of them! 👍

The location is very closed to Southern Cross station. And neighbourhood is so vibrant. I stayed there 3 nights and have a pleasant stay. Close to my exam venue. No significant noises, only because of the voice of the aircon on the high speed quite disturbing. Staff are helpful and we were able to put our luggages before check in time.

Great location and wonderful hospitality! We booked YEHS Little Bourke mainly because of its convenient location, close to Southern Cross Station, Melbourne Central, and plenty of shops and restaurants nearby. What we didn’t expect was the warm hospitality from Curry at reception. He was welcoming, friendly, and genuinely helpful, which added an extra special touch to our stay. We really enjoyed our experience and will definitely book here again when we come back to Melbourne. Hopefully, Curry will be there to welcome us again! 😊

Best thing is the location... The rooms are dated, not clean, and definitely not warranting the good reviews. The price is good for the location but we had a nicer stay in a hostel in cairns. The rooms smell stale and there is black mould throughout the bathrooms, and the first thing we saw was a cockroach 🪳 The room cards also stop working frequently. Agree with some other reviews - it's not good for westerner standard
