B&B Villa Costanza
At a glance: 4-star · 4 rooms
The best time to visit Orvieto is in May, June, and September, when temperatures are mild and rainfall is lower. July and August are the hottest months, while October and November are the rainiest. The famous Corpus Domini festival, with its flower-strewn streets, takes place in June, adding to the appeal of that month.
Stay in the historic center, on or near Corso Cavour, for easy access to the cathedral, Pozzo di San Patrizio, and the main restaurants. The medieval quarter around Torre del Moro suits those who want a quieter, more atmospheric base. For a stay with a view and a short walk downhill, the area near the Pozzo della Cava is lovely. B&B Residenza Cavour is located right on Corso Cavour, and B&B Villa Costanza is a few steps away, both making the center convenient.
The must-sees are the Cathedral, with its jewel-like Gothic facade and frescoes; Pozzo di San Patrizio, a deep spiral well built for a pope; Orvieto Underground, honeycombed Etruscan caves; Pozzo della Cava, another historic excavated well; and Torre del Moro, offering sweeping views over the tufa cliffs. These five cover the city's art, engineering, and ancient layers.
The full-day tours from Orvieto go to Civita di Bagnoregio, a hilltop village known for its dramatic setting and ancient streets, often called the dying city. One tour combines Civita with an underground tour of Orvieto itself, and another includes a lunch stop. These trips are the main day-trip options from the city.
Two days in Orvieto let you see the cathedral, Pozzo di San Patrizio, and Orvieto Underground at a relaxed pace, with time for Torre del Moro and Pozzo della Cava. Add a third day if you want to take a full-day tour to Civita di Bagnoregio, which is a separate excursion. One day is enough only for a quick look at the cathedral and the well, but you would miss the underground sights.
