The best time to visit Osaka is in April and May, when temperatures are mild (around 20-23°C) and humidity is lower, though May has more rain days. October is also pleasant with comfortable 24°C highs and fewer rainy days. The hottest, most humid stretch is July and August, with highs above 32°C and frequent rain. Winter months (December to February) are cool and dry, with the fewest rain days, but can be chilly. Spring's cherry blossom season in early April is a famous draw, though it can be busy.
Stay in Namba for the liveliest food and nightlife, with Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi nearby; it suits first-timers who want to be in the action. Umeda is the transport hub, great for business travelers and easy rail access, with hotels like Conrad Osaka and Hotel Hankyu RESPIRE OSAKA. Shinsaibashi offers a quieter yet central base for shopping and dining, with options like Joytel Hotel Namba Dotonbori. Shin-Osaka is convenient for shinkansen trips, though less atmospheric for sightseeing.
Osaka Castle is the city's iconic landmark, with its historic keep and surrounding park. Dotonbori is the lively canal-side district famous for its neon signs and street food. Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan is one of the world's largest aquariums, featuring a giant Pacific octopus. Umeda Sky Building offers a unique observation deck with panoramic city views. Tsutenkaku is a classic tower with a retro vibe and observation platform.
From Osaka, you can take full-day tours to Kyoto, Nara, Hiroshima, and Miyajima. Kyoto offers temples and shrines like Fushimi Inari and Kinkaku-ji, while Nara is known for its park with friendly deer. Hiroshima and Miyajima feature the Peace Memorial and the floating torii gate. Amanohashidate, a scenic sandbar, is also reachable on a day trip.
Plan 3 days in Osaka: day one for Osaka Castle and its park, day two for Dotonbori and Shinsaibashi, and day three for Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan and the Umeda Sky Building. Add a fourth day if you want a day trip to Kyoto or Nara, which are covered by full-day tours from the city. This gives you a relaxed pace without rushing.
