Overall it was a good stay. Location was excellent and very central to everything. Rooms were a good size and service was friendly. Breakfast was a big buffet with lots of option. The only reasons I wouldn’t give it a 5 is - coffee was not good and almost under drinkable. The beds were uncomfortable and had springs you could feel. Also the shower was very difficult to turn on in our room without getting sprayed.

Would not recommend at all. Staff is rude, entitled and incredibly unhelpful, they are very offensive in their treatment of guests. They are more preoccupied with talking with their peers than actually serving guests. The rooms are very small and uncomfortable. The bed, linens and pillows are of poor quality, rooms for two people barely fit one and there is no space for anything else. The elevator is slow and not accessible for differently abled people. Breakfast is absolutely not worth it. Everything is cold and there is no variety. Cannot believe this is rated as four stars hotel, it is two at best.

Don’t be scared away by these negative reviews. People are picky and weird. If you’re used to traveling in Europe and aren’t easily offended by weird things you’ll love it here. Fantastic location and very nice staff. Especially Luis in the bar! One of our bedside lights was out when we arrived, but no big deal. Unless you’re paying top dollar for your European hotels, the beds here are like any bed I’ve come across here. Not super soft or memory foam, but I prefer a firm bed anyway. Would definitely stay again!

My girlfriend and I spent 3 nights here and overall had a great stay. The room was clean, well organised and exactly what you'd expect from a solid city hotel. No complaints on that front. That said, a few things caught us off guard. First, the windows in our room couldn't be opened at all — not ideal if you enjoy some fresh air, especially on a nice day in Porto. Second, the in-room water was priced at €3 for a small bottle, which feels excessive for a hotel at this level. Small things, but worth knowing before you arrive. The one that bothered us most was arriving at reception to be greeted by the smell of cigarette smoke drifting in through the door. Staff were smoking right at the entrance, which is far from the welcome you'd hope for after a day of travelling. Despite those points, the positives outweigh the negatives and we'd likely stay again. Just a few easy fixes that would make a real difference to the overall experience.

Hotel is in a great location but that's about it. Not good value for the price and definitely overrated for a 4-star hotel. We were made to change rooms twice - first because of a broken sofa bed which they were not aware of and then because a window to the main street did not close properly. Very limited house keeping. Laundry needs to be delivered and picked up from the reception. May have been one of the iconic Hotels in Porto in the past, but unfortunately did not meet our expectations.

The location is great, and the building itself is beautiful, both inside and out. Unfortunately, the rooms really need some updating. The bed was honestly the worst hotel bed I’ve ever slept in. The mattress felt like it was 100 years old, and the pillows were just as bad—completely worn out and uncomfortable. For the price you pay, you’d really expect better. I mentioned the bed at checkout, and the receptionist replied, “Next time, you could ask for a mattress cover.” That response made me feel like this is probably something they’ve heard from other guests before. Honestly, though, guests shouldn’t have to ask for a mattress cover—the mattress and pillows just need to be replaced. It’s a shame because the hotel itself is really nice and has a lot of potential. But when the bed is that uncomfortable, it definitely affects the whole stay.

Great hotel in the heart of Porto, just a short walk to the riverside and all the main attractions. A special thanks to Mariana G. who was incredibly kind and helpful. We had some booking issues, but she handled everything smoothly and did her absolute best to make our stay comfortable. The only small downside was some noise from outside during the night until around 1–2 AM. Better insulated windows would make the experience even better. Overall, a lovely stay and highly recommended for the location and excellent service.

Advertised as a 4 star hotel, the entire experience was underwhelming to say the least. For starters, the reception clearly doesn’t like American’s, or maybe just people in general. Rude and condescending would be my top 2 adjectives. You're in a customer service position, get another job if you are unhappy. Most notable, when asking the front desk for water (a basic human need that a hostel would accommodate) was told they had none, and no places around were open to sell any. Walked out the front door, 15 feet across the street to the local pub and bought 2 large bottles of water. Mind blowing that a 4 star hotel can’t provide a basic necessity or care enough to help find one 15 feet away. Next, the AC is a joke, fortunately the night temps get to low 60’s but have to listen to bird/cat fights that sound like I’m front row at a UFC event. Finally, when asking to hold our bags upon checkout, they charged us for it. It's not expensive, but the principal of charging for that is just wild. Just not “4 star” service all around, and will be staying at the Avantgarde going forward.
