The best time is December through March, when days are warm and rain is rare, with January and February the most pleasant. June and July are the rainiest and coldest months, with frequent showers and lows near freezing. Spring and fall are mild but wetter, especially April and May. For outdoor activities, summer offers the driest, most comfortable conditions.
Center of San Martín de los Andes, around San Martín Avenue and the Plaza, suits first-time visitors for easy access to shops, cafes, and the waterfront. The Lake Lacar shore, near the waterfront, is ideal for those wanting lake views and a relaxed stroll to the center. The Circuito Arrayán area, a short drive out, suits nature lovers seeking a quieter mountain setting. Notable hotels here include Antares Patagonia Suites & Eventos and Patagonia Plaza Hotel in the center, and Arrayan Hostería de Montaña y Casa de Té on the circuit.
Start at Lake Lacar Waterfront for the lake and mountain views. San Martin Plaza is the town's central gathering point. Drive or ride the Ruta de Los Siete Lagos, a scenic route linking lakes and forests. Parque Nacional Lanín offers hiking and nature around the volcano. Mirador Bandurrias gives a panoramic overlook of the lake and town.
The full-day tours listed for San Martín de los Andes actually go to destinations in Colombia, not nearby, so they are not useful for day trips from this city. Well-known day trips from San Martín de los Andes include the Ruta de los Siete Lagos, a scenic drive through lakes and forests, and the town of Junín de los Andes, a quiet gateway to the Lanín volcano area. Both are classic excursions from the city.
Plan 3 to 4 days. In 3 days, you can see the Lake Lacar Waterfront, San Martin Plaza, and hike Mirador Bandurrias or La Islita. Add a fourth day for the Ruta de Los Siete Lagos or Parque Nacional Lanín. If you want a full-day tour, add one more day.
