Siena Hills Apartments

The best times to visit Siena are May, June, and September, when temperatures are mild and rain is less frequent. July and August are the hottest and driest months, with highs around 32°C, while November and December are the rainiest and most humid. Spring and early autumn offer the most comfortable conditions for exploring the city's sights.

Stay in the historic center to be near Piazza del Campo and the cathedral. The area around Via Banchi di Sopra suits first-timers, with hotels like B&B Il Corso and Grand Hotel Continental. Near the Duomo, Residenza d'Epoca Palazzo Borghesi and Il Battistero are convenient for sightseeing. For a quieter stay, the countryside just outside the walls, like at Borgo Scopeto, suits those with a car.

Start at Piazza del Campo, the shell-shaped square that hosts the Palio and is the city's heart. The Siena Cathedral is a masterpiece of striped marble and mosaic floors. Palazzo Pubblico, the Gothic town hall, offers frescoes and tower views. Santa Maria della Scala, a former hospital, now holds art and archaeology. Basilica Cateriniana di San Domenico is tied to Saint Catherine.

From Siena, full-day tours head to Montalcino for Brunello wine tasting, Montepulciano and Pienza for hilltop towns and pecorino cheese, and San Gimignano with Volterra for medieval towers and alabaster. Another option combines San Gimignano, Chianti, and Montalcino, while a separate tour covers San Gimignano, Siena, and Monteriggioni. These are all easy, well-established day trips from the city.

Plan 2 days for Siena itself: one to see Piazza del Campo, the Cathedral, and Palazzo Pubblico, and a second for Santa Maria della Scala, the Museo dell'Opera del Duomo, and the Pinacoteca Nazionale. If you want to take a day trip to places like San Gimignano, Montalcino, or Montepulciano, add an extra day. Three days total gives you a comfortable pace.
