Beautiful rooms and beautiful hotel! The service here was TOP NOTCH. I have stayed at many places in Japan but this one was above and beyond with their customer service. The room was beautiful too and we had a private hot tub/onsen outdoors. Amazing. Would definitely recommend for a special occasion or relaxing trip!

We stayed here for 2 nights with our 3 children (13, 17 and 20) because I really wanted to experience a traditional Ryokan as part of our 3.5 trip to Japan. My husband and kids had some reservations when I told them about the “naked onsen”, traditional robes and elaborate dining experiences but they went along with it. And what a great decision that was! My 20 year old actually congratulated me on pushing to stay here because he enjoyed it so much.! We were greeted with welcome drinks and immediately introduced to a different culture as we were required to leave our shoes at the entrance. After a smooth check in we were shown around before being taken to our room. The reception area is impressive and very zen with the dark wood, cute bridges and koi carp filled water ways. We were shown where the onsen (separate male and female) was, the sake and ramen bar, the foot bath and the shop. We were then taken to our room. We stayed in a family room for all 5 of us on night one before moving into two separate rooms with private insensible fro night two. Both rooms were fabulous with their own character. The family room felt traditional and fun with the kids sleeping on traditional futons. The separate rooms felt more luxurious. The kids even had a massage chair in theirs! Having the private insensible meant a private garden which again added to the luxury feel and it was very zen! All of the rooms came with every amenity imaginable and of course the traditional robes. There were two sets of robes- one set for dinner and one set that was more casual. After some initial reluctance we all donned the robes and soaked up the experience. My hubby found them so comfortable that he bought some!! The dining experience was fabulous (even if several courses were not entertained by the kids!) Breakfast and dinner was an event in our own private room (complete with our name lantern outside to mark the way). So memorable. I braved the public onsen despite my typical British reserve- it was actually quite liberating and fortunately empty which helped!! We were looked after by the wonderful Ami during our stay who was just adorable. All of the staff were so kind and hospitable. They all went out of their way to make our stay special. The hotel room goers a complimentary bus to/from the centre of Takayama which was ideal. It’s only 10 mins away and is walkable but the service is so convenient. Takayama itself is beautiful and definitely worth a day or two to explore. Our two day stay here was a real highlight of our trip and one which we will remember for a long time.

We had a fantastic ryokan experience with first-class service. The hotel is located a bit outside the city center, in a very quiet neighborhood—like an oasis. Unfortunately, we could only stay for one night; Takayama was just one stop on our tour, but I could have easily spent more time here. We requested a Japanese-style room for the three of us; due to the short stay, we basically only went to the room to sleep. The mattresses were comfortable, the room was quiet, and we slept well. We were provided with beautiful yukata and pajamas. Everything was available in the onsen, and the outdoor pools were fantastic—truly relaxing. The highlight, however, was dinner in the private room. The food was delicious and beautifully presented, and they accommodated our request for gluten-free options.

Our stay at Hidatei Hanaougi was one of the more memorable ryokan experiences we have had in Japan. The property strikes a rare balance between traditional hospitality and understated luxury, without feeling overly commercial or performative. The room itself was exceptional — spacious, warm, and thoughtfully designed with natural wood tones and clean Japanese aesthetics. The private onsen integrated into the room elevated the entire stay. Sitting in the outdoor bath with the sound of flowing water, especially with a cold drink in hand after a long drive, felt genuinely restorative rather than merely “Instagrammable.” The atmosphere was calm, intimate, and deeply relaxing. Dinner and breakfast were both beautifully executed. The presentation was meticulous without becoming gimmicky. Ingredients tasted fresh and seasonal, and the pacing of the meal reflected the classic ryokan philosophy of slow, intentional dining. The Hida beef in particular stood out — rich but balanced — and the overall meal felt comforting rather than heavy. Breakfast was equally impressive, with the kind of attention to detail that reminds you why traditional Japanese hospitality remains difficult to replicate elsewhere. Service throughout the stay was gracious and sincere. Staff were attentive without being intrusive, and there was a quiet professionalism that made everything feel seamless. That is often the difference between a good ryokan and a truly refined one. One thing worth noting is that this is not the place for travellers seeking nightlife, modern urban energy, or endless entertainment options. The appeal lies precisely in slowing down: soaking in the bath, enjoying the food, listening to the water, and appreciating the stillness. Hidatei Hanaougi feels less like a hotel stay and more like a deliberate pause from modern life. We left feeling rested in a way that very few luxury properties actually achieve.

I had booked 2 nights here and then 1 night in a different Ryokan and boy do I wish we had not moved. Our experience here was nothing short of amazing! The location is a bit farther away from Old Town, but it is a quick shuttle or taxi ride in and being away in the quiet setting made it so peaceful and relaxing. This is a true Ryokan experience and is traditional in every way. When we arrived, we were greeted by staff who bowed and walked us to a lovely area where they offered us tea or a beer and a snack while they went through all of the options for our stay. Kodi spoke great English and showed us around and to our room, he was also our server for our meals. Our room was absolutely amazing and felt like we were stepping back in time. We had a private outdoor onsen with a view of the mountains and a massage chair that we used often. The meals were absolutely amazing and we were stuffed after each one! We had 2 dinners and 2 breakfasts (traditional Japanese style, but they modified mine as I do not eat meat). Every detail was exquisite throughout the entire property…..the foot soak, onsen and every piece of furniture and artwork was amazing. The staff was so unbelievable. I enjoyed a facial and that was lovely too. I did not appreciate it all as much as I should have because it was our first experience at a Ryokan, but after going to a second, which was grossly disappointing, I would highly recommend staying here! This is 5 Star all the way!

We spent a few nights here in April and can only say it is excellent in every aspect. From arrival through to departure the team is 100% customer-focused. Our room was truly exceptional with a beautiful garden and private onsen. We had a host that met us on arrival and cared for us throughout our stay, including our Japanese dinners and breakfast. It is a beautiful Ryokan in a beautiful city. Such a high class and enjoyable experience that we fully recommend. Thank you to the entire team!

This stay turned out to be a memorable highlight of our trip. Upon arriving in the area, we weren’t immediately impressed with the surroundings, but that quickly changed once we explored the town and stepped inside the hotel.|From the outside, the property feels modest and slightly understated. However, once inside, you are fully immersed in traditional Japanese hospitality. Shoes off at the door, slippers provided, and a warm welcome with tea set the tone.|Our room was spacious, with beautiful views of cherry blossoms. It featured two low Western-style beds along with a traditional futon setup. The bathroom was large and well equipped, and the onsen (natural hot spring bath), partially outdoors, was a wonderful experience.|Meals were exceptional. Both dinner and breakfast were served privately in a dedicated dining room by a traditional attendant. The presentation was elegant and authentically Japanese. Portions are small by Western standards, but the experience is about artistry and variety. A Western breakfast option is available if preferred.|The décor throughout the hotel is rich and traditional, and the service is truly refined.|Bottom line: An immersive and elegant traditional Japanese experience—highly recommended.

This has to be one of my favorite places I have ever stayed on any vacation. The staff were extremely friendly and accommodating. The property was absolutely beautiful, and our room was gorgeous and spotlessly clean. We booked a room with a private onsen, and it was wonderful and incredibly relaxing. Additionally, the breakfast and dinners were complex and amazing. The staff were extremely punctual with food preparation, and the service was excellent. A special shout-out to Misaki, who served us dinner and breakfast on one of the days. She was so kind and took time to chat with us. She even made us an origami swan, which I’ve kept for the rest of my trip :) All of the staff were so sweet and helpful. I genuinely cannot recommend this place enough. After spending five days in the busy streets of Tokyo, this was the perfect end to a relaxing stay.
