Wonderful lovely small hotel. In between comfort and authentic experience. We really enjoyed service and personnel, private onsen bath was great as well, very lovely cozy lounge on first floor where you can enjoy snacks, tea and coffee. You can buy as well local beer and drinks. Only need to keep in mind that rooms are quite compact and if you have more than 2 suitcases might be challenging. Amenities in rooms could be a little bit better (at least to have few bottles of water and etc), but you can get everything in lobby. And maybe I wish to have few more shelves and drawers here and there. Very convenient and budget friendly in house washing machine (laundromat) and dryer working from coins

The room was amazing, very large with traditional Japanese feel. Two in house onsens were very nice. Sara on reception was just fantastic with the level of service. She called the train station, rent a car business and taxis to help us out. Definitely over and above, 5 star service

Amazing staff. They can speak English which is a bonus with our very limited Japanese. You can enjoy a nice selection of tea in the restaurant area for free and they'll even break some snacks for you. The bath are totally worth it. It's 500jpy per person without the drinks, but they do provide a water bottle. You just have to make a reservation at the front desk and you can use the room for 1hour which is plenty. They have both Continental and japanese options for breakfast. I wish they had more than one option for the Japanese. Great location in Takayama.

The Machiya Hotel in Takayama is one of the nicest places we have stayed in during our many travels in Japan. The front desk staff were welcoming and helpful and the room was absolutely gorgeous, a combination of western beds and futon and a view of tiny garden covered with snow. We were fortunate to be upgraded to a room with a hinoki cypress bath and it is very pleasant to bath on wood rather than stone, plastic or ceramic. The Machiya is close to the station, a little walk from the town centre. It was a little tricky in the snow at times, but that is to be expected. We didn't take advantage of the common room, tea or coffee, but it looked nice. There was a sense of privacy and friendliness in this small residence. Our only wish was to stay longer.

The front desk staff were very welcoming, and the room was clean, simple, and comfortable. My only complaint is that after checking out, I contacted the hotel with a question but didn’t receive a reply, which slightly affected my overall experience.

We had a very pleasant stay. The room was spacious with a nice design, and the service was excellent — every staff member we met was kind and helpful. Since we mentioned we were on our honeymoon, we received drinks of our choice and snacks in the room, which was a really thoughtful touch. The location is convenient, about a 7-minute walk to the main tourist area and just 2 minutes from a 7-Eleven. There’s no on-site parking, but the hotel arranged a reserved spot in a nearby lot (200m away) for 1000 yen per night, which worked out fine. The lobby also offers free coffee and tea with some cozy seating areas, which was a nice bonus. A couple of small downsides: there are stairs up to the rooms. The staff kindly helped carry our luggage at check-in, but we had to manage on our own at check-out. Also, we paid 1000 yen per person for access to the private onsen, but it turned out to be more like a large bath with lukewarm water — not comparable to a real onsen and a bit disappointing after experiencing authentic ones. Overall, a charming hotel with warm hospitality, good facilities, and a convenient location — recommended, just skip the private onsen.
