Looking back at the Apartment

Visit in April, May, September, or October, when temperatures are mild and rain is less frequent. June through August is hot and humid, with July and August bringing the most rain. Winter months are cold but dry, with few rainy days. The city is pleasant in spring and autumn, though the famous Terracotta Army is an indoor site, so it works year-round.

Stay near the Bell Tower for central access to the old city and the Fortifications, ideal for first-timers. The South Gate area offers a quieter, more local feel with easy access to the city wall. Around the Big Wild Goose Pagoda suits those wanting modern amenities and evening shows. The Gaoxin district is convenient for business travelers, with several hotels like Citadines Gaoxin Xian.

Start with Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum, home to the Terracotta Army. Walk the Fortifications of Xi'an, the best-preserved city wall in China. Climb the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda for its Tang dynasty history and views. Visit the Great Mosque of Xi'an, a serene blend of Chinese and Islamic architecture. See the Bell Tower at the city's center, and don't miss the Shaanxi History Museum for its rich collection of ancient artifacts.

The full-day tours from Xi'an go to the Terracotta Army, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, and the City Wall. The Terracotta Army is the main draw, with its thousands of life-sized warriors. The Big Wild Goose Pagoda is a historic Buddhist site, and the City Wall offers a walk or bike ride around the old town. These are the standard day trip options from the city.

Plan 3 days in Xi'an: one for the Emperor Qinshihuang's Mausoleum Site Museum, one for the Fortifications of Xi'an, Bell Tower, and Great Mosque, and one for the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda and Shaanxi History Museum. If you add a day trip, allow a fourth day. Two days can cover the main sights if you move quickly, but three feels comfortable.
