The hotel location is amazing - right on the beach and in central Stone Town. The hotel facilities are fantastic with 3 pools, sun deck and lovely restaurant onto the beach. It's worth specifically requesting a room on the upper floors, as the ground floor rooms are compromised. The hotel breakfast was generous and varied and choice of menu options also good. Customer care is variable, but it's a busy hotel in a busy town - so perhaps to be expected. Overall a very pleasant stay. Would recommend.

Good location - in the center of everything in Stone town. They don’t have water coolers for clients - you have to go to the restaurant to refill. Also: it seems they bought another building. So they accommodated us in like 200 meters from main facility. Surely it’s kind of inconvenient but still ok.

Beautiful historic hotel close to Forodhani Gardens in Stone Town and many restaurants, shopping etc. The location is right on the beach which made it very nice and relaxing for me sitting on the balcony taking in the beautiful views and activities below, especially at sunset. The arrival experience from Nairobi to Zanzibar was the most unpleasant ever! On August 31st at Nairobi airport, I had to deal with major chaos due to a strike. 90% of flights were cancelled that day, but luckily my flight still took off 8 hours late. I was supposed to arrive ZNZ at 6pm that evening, but I arrived at 2am the next morning, without both of my suitcases. Half the people on this flight KQ494 did not get their luggage at Zanzibar airport, as Kenya Airways had not loaded them on the plane. |I was so tired and devastated about this arriving at 2:30am to the hotel, but the staff were amazing helping me to call several times a day, the following days to check on the status of my luggage. The two gentlemen who assisted me for the 3 days I did not have my luggage were Ferej and Abaabakry. I have to mention them by name because they showed compassion and went out of their way to call the airport and help me. When the two pieces of luggage finally arrived the last evening, I was there they delivered them to my suite. I was so happy because I was leaving the following morning to go to another part of the island. While at the hotel I enjoyed the breakfast with the views over the beach, the location of this hotel is the best and in general the staff were amazing. Also, a shout out to housekeeping and front desk in general. If ever back in Zanzibar I know where I'll be staying!

Returning to my birthplace after sixty years was a deeply personal and momentous occasion, and staying at the Tembo House Hotel in Shangani, Zanzibar, made this homecoming truly unforgettable. First and foremost, what made our experience so incredibly special was the outstanding hospitality. The hotel staff are exceptionally warm, friendly, and genuinely eager to assist with a smile. From the front-of-house team and the hardworking housekeeping staff to the upper management personnel, absolutely everyone went out of their way to ensure we felt welcomed, valued, and completely looked after. No request was too small, and their attentive, caring attitude added a wonderful personal touch to our daily stay. Beyond the stellar service, the hotel's location is absolutely perfect. The rooms are well-appointed, beautifully catered to guest comfort, and offer excellent value for any budget. We also thoroughly enjoyed the on-site dining; the restaurant provides a fantastic breakfast spread to start the day, as well as an extensive lunch and dinner menu with plenty of delicious options to choose from. In a nutshell, our stay was nothing short of exceptional. I cannot recommend the Tembo House Hotel highly enough to anyone planning a trip to Zanzibar. As an added bonus, the hotel sits in a prime spot for exploring—iconic landmarks like the Freddie Mercury Museum and the famous, bustling "Jaws Corner" nestled in the historic stone alleys are both just a short, pleasant walk away.

This is a large-scale property located right in the epicenter of Stone Town. The complex consists of one main building (Tembo House Hotel) and two auxiliary buildings situated across the street down small alleys (Tembo Apartments and Tembo Palace Hotel). Walking between the buildings is not scary at all, but it is important to pay close attention to what you are actually booking so you know whether you are staying in the main hotel or one of the annexes across the street. The location itself is truly unbeatable, and the lobby and pool area have a gorgeous design. The room interiors are decorated in a stunning Arabic aesthetic with beautiful woodwork. We also appreciated the security: there is a very friendly guard downstairs checking guest lists, as well as security stationed out by the beach. The restaurant is lovely, and the waitress serving there was exceptionally kind and welcoming. The checkout process is extremely comfortable and accommodating. Even after checking out at 10:00 AM, you are allowed full use of all the hotel facilities for the rest of the day. They have a secure luggage holding area with staff always present to watch your bags, as well as a dedicated, clean shower facility so you can freshen up before your journey. A very important practical tip when booking a taxi from here: make sure your driver checks the ferry arrival and departure schedules. The port is right next to the hotel, and you definitely want to leave the area before the large passenger ferries arrive; otherwise, you will get stuck in heavy, standstill traffic while trying to reach the airport. However, our stay in the apartment building had several practical drawbacks: * Mosquito nets: There were mosquitoes in the room even during their winter season, making mosquito nets genuinely necessary. Initially, there were none installed, and although staff mentioned housekeeping sprays every evening, we didn't notice any signs of it. When we asked the front desk the next day, they did promptly provide and set up nets for us. * Tiny in-room safe: The safe is ridiculously compact—large enough only for phones and passports, with zero chance of fitting camera gear or larger valuables. * Extremely slow Wi-Fi: While the network connection showed full bars, the actual upload and download speeds were practically 0 Mbps, making it impossible to back up photos or make a video call. * Cleanliness issues on high surfaces: While the main areas are generally kept clean, the open clothes rack and the areas above the curtains had thick clumps of dust hanging down. You only really notice it when hanging your clothes, but it definitely needs attention. * No in-room information brochure: There was no booklet or directory to check basic details, like breakfast opening times or important phone numbers. * Beach: While it is waterfront, do not count on the beach directly outside for swimming. * Tiny bathroom sink: The sink space in the bathroom is so small that there is barely room for toothbrushes and a couple of creams. You can see holes from the previous design where they had a larger counter before shrinking it down. * No provided toiletries: Essential bathroom amenities were missing. * Faulty AC remote: In room C1, the air conditioner remote was very erratic and unreliable, and it wasn't an issue with the batteries.

My second stay at Tembo and the place is as lovely as I remembered. A short walk from the ferry station, the hotel is optimal located to enjoy stonetown and forazani at night. My only criticism is the long check in time, rooms being unavailable or changed even after a prebooking. The kids pool end could also be cleaner.

Our time at this hotel was really pleasant, we arrived earlier than check in but were able to take a shower get changed and leave our bags with the front desk. The rooms are spacious, modern and clean. We found the balcony a great touch to have, and the kitchenette is fully equipped with anything you could need. We had no issues with sleep as the curtains are blackout, we also couldn't hear any one else in the rooms next to us. The bed and pillows are also extremely comfortable! As some other reviews said i would agree some of the surrounding area isn't too aesthetically pleasing. However that doesn't define a place and it definitely didn't affect our stay, we found the local people polite and did not feel unsafe. They also have an amazing local bakery which does delicious pastries. The closest beach is a twenty minute walk away - but i'd advise getting a bike to make the journey shorter. It's a more quiet local beach which we really enjoyed. There is a supermarket close by which is very convenient, it sells cooling bags so you can pick up snacks and drinks etc. I found the staff throughout the stay very accommodating, they provided quick reliable service. Also came to our room and delivered chocolates, alchohol and a card for my fiancées birthday without me even asking. The only small thing i would complain about is we didn't have the chance to use the rooftop pool. It was a small space with six or so loungers often overcrowded whenever we tried to go, i also read online it's open to the public which doesn't help the situation. However it didn't affect our stay at all as we luckily had the beach close by but could be an issue for some.

Upon checking in. We realized I booked the wrong date for the day before. This was my fault. The worker checked the reservation system and said they have lots of available rooms. I asked since it shows I didnt check in yesterday if it can simply and logically be transfered to today. He went to ask his boss. His boss declined. So he offered me the regular walk in full price of the hotel. I told him plain and simple I dont want to reward a hotel for such actions. While the hotel policies are clear they could have allowed me to stay but instead wanted to make extra money by charging me again. What they have lost is youtube vlog of the property I had been planning which is not something particularly important to them but I mean they could have gotten a 5 star reviews and a positive online video of the facilities but instead chose to try and make more money and therefore chose a 1 star review. I wish I could have stayed there but there are so many options on the island it was easy to book elsewhere. Advice is that overlooking minor errors if it doesnt cost u anything can bring u repeat business and rave reviews across platforms.
