The best time to visit is April, May, September, and October, when temperatures are mild and rain is less frequent. June through August are the hottest and rainiest months, with July and August reaching 33°C. Winter months are drier but cooler, with January and December seeing fewer rain days. For the most comfortable weather and clearer views of the sandstone pillars, plan your trip in spring or autumn.
Stay in Wulingyuan to be near the national forest park, Yuanjiajie, and the glass bridge; it suits hikers and sightseers. The Pullman Zhangjiajie Hotel and Xiangruige Boutique Hotel are there. For Tianmen Mountain, stay in the Yongding city center, near the cableway station, with options like the Hampton by Hilton or Zhangjiajie Huatian Hotel. Yongding is also convenient for dining and transport.
Start with Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, the core of the sandstone pillar landscape, and Yuanjiajie, the inspiration for the floating Hallelujah Mountains in Avatar. Ride the Tianmenshan Cableway up Tianmen Mountain for dramatic cliff views and the famous mountain gate. The Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge offers a thrilling walk above the canyon, and Huanglongdong Scenic Area reveals a vast karst cave with underground rivers.
The full-day tours head to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and Yuanjiajie, known as Avatar Mountain, plus the Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge and Huanglongdong Scenic Area. These cover the park's pillar peaks, the glass bridge, and the cave. If you prefer a classic day trip, Fenghuang Ancient Town is a well-known riverside town with stilt houses, and Tianmen Mountain, with its cableway and cliff path, is another option.
Plan 3 to 4 days. Spend 2 days in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, covering Yuanjiajie and the Avatar Mountain scenery, plus the Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge. Use a third day for Tianmen Mountain, including the Tianmenshan Cableway. If you add a full-day tour to Huanglongdong Scenic Area, plan a fourth day.
