Capela STELLA MARIS BALCIC
Perched on a small stone terrace above the Black Sea, the Stella Maris Chapel is the most intimate building in Bulgaria's Balchik Palace complex — a Byzantine jewel built in 1929–1930 by Queen Marie of Romania as her personal place of prayer. Called the smallest church in the country by the queen herself, it holds far more emotional weight than its modest footprint suggests: her heart rested here for two years, and visitors today still speak of stepping inside with a sense of hush and reverence. The chapel is part of the State Cultural Institute "The Palace" (Dvoretsa), a seaside heritage site in Balchik that welcomes visitors year-round. Its warm local stone, deep-blue frescoes, an eighteenth-century iconostasis brought from Cyprus, and a gilded carved throne packed with early Christian symbolism make it one of the most atmospheric small sacred spaces on the Bulgarian coast.
