Playa Guacalillo
Playa Guacalillo is a long, dark-sand beach on Costa Rica's central Pacific coast, tucked into the canton of Garabito in Puntarenas Province. Roughly four kilometres of grey-black sand meet towering cliffs, scattered boulders, mangroves and lagoons, giving this corner of the coast a wild, unpolished character that sets it apart from the resort beaches of nearby Jacó. For years one of the better-kept secrets of Costa Rica's western shore, Guacalillo has drawn surfers, photographers and birders to its dramatic rock formations, famously fiery sunsets and the towering headland known as El Peñón de Guacalillo. It rewards travelers who don't mind a rough road and who come for scenery, wildlife and solitude rather than a fully serviced resort strip.
