Malura Museum
Tucked in the small village of Oberdießen, part of the Unterdießen community south of Landsberg am Lech in Bavaria, the Malura Museum is the intimate, hand-built home of the painter Oswald Malura (1906–2003). What began in the late 1970s when a 71-year-old artist bought a crumbling old farmhouse and, through years of his own labour, transformed it into a cultural centre, finally opened as a museum in 1993 after a full renovation. Today three floors trace the arc of Malura's long, restless life, from his early academic paintings to his colourful years in India and his post-war abstraction. Yet this is more than a one-man collection: it is a living meeting place, hosting rotating shows by other artists, readings, concerts and workshops, with a café serving coffee and homemade cake. The whole place embodies Malura's lifelong dream of art as a bridge between nations, generations and walks of life.
