WÄLDERHAUS

Tucked inside the Wilhelmsburger Inselpark on Hamburg's Elbe island, the Wälderhaus (Forest House) is a striking five-storey building devoted entirely to woodland and sustainability. Half science centre, half architectural showpiece, it brings the forest into the heart of the city: an interactive exhibition explains the ecology of woods, a load-bearing timber structure demonstrates sustainable building, and a hotel, restaurant and event rooms let you linger for a day or a night. The main draw for visitors is the free Science Center Wald on the ground floor, where some 80 discovery stations explore how forests, climate, water and biodiversity interlock. It is the kind of low-key, hands-on stop that suits families, school groups and curious adults, and it pairs perfectly with a wander through the surrounding 85-hectare park.

WIWA - Baggerplatz Ausflugsziele Erlebnispark - Baggerpark - freizeitaktivität

WIWA Baggerplatz in Hamburg-Wilhelmsburg is the rare kind of attraction that turns a childhood fantasy into an afternoon: you climb into the cab of a real hydraulic excavator and dig, lift and drive it yourself, from nimble mini-machines up to a 22-tonne tracked giant. It is the playful offshoot of WIWA Wilko Wagner GmbH, a demolition and earthworks firm, which is why the equipment here is the genuine article rather than a kiddie ride. Beginners are not thrown in at the deep end. An experienced machine operator gives a clear, roughly fifteen-minute induction, then stays close by—ready to answer questions or shut the machine down with a remote control if needed—while you work the joysticks alone. Across more than four excavators and thirty-plus tonnes of steel, guests can scoop, move and shift different materials and even drive around the open grounds, so a session feels like real site work rather than a fixed-position demo. Reviews consistently praise the relaxed, smiling staff, the surprisingly delicate response of the big machines, and the souvenir photo of you posed with the excavator. With a 4.9 rating from hundreds of visitors, it has become a go-to for birthday gifts, family outings and anyone—man, woman or older child—who ever wanted to be Bob the Builder for real.
