Symbiosis

Symbiosis is a large stainless-steel sculpture on the bank of the Aura River in Turku, Finland, designed by the celebrated Finnish artist Stefan Lindfors and unveiled in June 2014. Part fish, part bird, and entirely of the sea, it rises in curved, scale-like steel plates beside the Forum Marinum maritime museum and the tall ship Suomen Joutsen, making it hard to miss for anyone strolling Turku's riverfront. What makes it unusual is that the work is never truly finished. Each shining "scale" and "feather" on its surface is a donated sheet of acid-resistant steel engraved with a donor's name, welded on as people chip in. All proceeds go to the Archipelago Sea Protection Fund, which channels the money into concrete local projects to clean and protect the waters off Turku—so the sculpture is simultaneously a piece of public art and a living fundraising campaign for the sea that inspired it.

Nunnapolun rappuset

Tucked along Munittulantie in the quiet, open countryside of Maaria on the northern edge of Turku, Nunnapolun rappuset is a small but evocative piece of Finnish history: a surviving stepped section of the **Nunnapolku**, the medieval pilgrim road that once carried travellers from Turku Cathedral out toward the churches of Rusko and Nousiainen. It is not a grand monument but a humble roadside remnant — the kind of place whose interest lies in what it quietly marks rather than in sheer size. The name reads literally as 'the steps of the Nunnapolku,' and the site sits on the line of one of the oldest named routes in the region. The Nunnapolku formed the southernmost link of **Pyhän Henrikin tie (Saint Henry's Way)**, a network of medieval pilgrimage roads stretching roughly 140 km to Kokemäki and tied to the legend of Bishop Henry, whose relics were moved into Turku Cathedral around the year 1300. Walking the old path today means following, in spirit, the footsteps of centuries of pilgrims.
