Maen Cliff Castle
Maen Cliff Castle is an Iron Age promontory fort — a Cornish 'cliff castle' — crowning a narrow headland on Mayon Cliff just east of Sennen Cove, a short walk from Land's End at the far western tip of Cornwall. Rather than a castle of towers and turrets, it is a hilltop of stone ramparts and a rock-cut ditch with sheer Atlantic cliffs dropping away on three sides, giving the site a raw, wind-battered drama that few monuments can match. The fort is one of only two sites in Cornwall to yield Early Iron Age pottery, placing it among the earliest defended places in prehistoric West Penwith, and it survives as a protected scheduled monument set within National Trust cliffland. The walk out across the heath to the ramparts, the restored stone entrance, and the sweep of sea views toward the Longships and Land's End make it a rewarding, free and unmissable stop on the South West Coast Path.
