Monastero di Astino
Tucked into the green Valle di Astino within Bergamo's protected Parco dei Colli, the Monastery of Astino is a thousand-year-old Vallombrosan foundation that has been rescued from centuries of neglect and brought back to vivid life. Today it is a place where Romanesque architecture, Renaissance art, and cultivated landscape coexist in rare harmony — just ten minutes from Bergamo's city center yet feeling worlds away. Visitors can explore the beautifully restored Church of the Holy Sepulchre with its distinctive tau-cross layout, see Alessandro Allori's monumental 1580 Last Supper in the refectory, learn the monastery's remarkable story through a permanent exhibition, and wander the surrounding meadows and hill trails. Individual entry to the church is free; the site is open at weekends and weekday evenings.
