Archaeological Park of Herculaneum
The Archaeological Park of Herculaneum protects the ruins of an ancient Roman seaside town entombed by the eruption of Vesuvius in AD 79. Buried under a thick mantle of hot volcanic mud and ash, Herculaneum was sealed so completely that whole neighbourhoods survived in astonishing detail—upper storeys, painted walls, wooden fittings and streets once open to the sea. A walk here feels less like visiting a ruin and more like stepping into a town frozen mid-day. It is one of the most evocative and best-preserved windows onto daily Roman life anywhere, and a quieter, more intimate counterpart to nearby Pompeii.
