Otaru City General Museum
The Otaru City General Museum is one of Hokkaido's most rewarding stops for anyone curious about the island's industrial birth. Set on the grounds of the old Temiya Station—the terminus of Hokkaido's very first railway—it preserves fifty historic trains, nationally protected locomotive sheds dating to the 1880s, and a working 1909 steam engine that still billows white smoke and hauls passengers along a short outdoor track each summer. Inside, a renovated planetarium with 4K projection, hands-on science galleries, and a Japan Heritage exhibition on coal-and-rail industry complement the outdoor rail yard, making the museum equally appealing to families, railway enthusiasts, and history-curious travelers.
