Bogwangsa
Perched on the western slopes of Goryeongsan Mountain in Paju, Bogwangsa Temple is a thousand-year-old Buddhist sanctuary whose quiet grandeur and remarkable royal connections make it one of Gyeonggi Province's most rewarding temple visits. Founded in 894 by the legendary geomancer-monk Doseon and later designated as the guardian temple for the tomb of King Yeongjo's mother, Bogwangsa weaves together national spiritual history, rare artistic treasures, and a serene mountain setting just 30 kilometers from Seoul. The temple is the largest traditional Buddhist monastery in Paju and is designated Traditional Temple No. 41 by the Korean government. Its Daeungbo-jeon Hall features unusually vivid exterior paintings applied directly onto wooden panels rather than the typical plaster walls, while a 300-year-old juniper tree planted by a grieving king stands watch beside the hall that holds his mother's spirit tablet.
