Mašēnu ezers
Mašēnu Lake (Mašēnu ezers) is a shallow, plant-rich lake perched right on Riga's eastern doorstep, just minutes from the Berģi suburban neighbourhood yet feeling worlds away from the capital's bustle. At only 0.8 metres average depth and a maximum of 1.2 metres, this 37.5-hectare water body is one of those hidden natural corners that many Riga residents don't even know exists. Formed in an ancient lagoon depression from the sediment deposits of Latvia's Jugla river system, the lake is an ecological treasure — a spawning ground for pike, carp, crucian carp, tench, and even European catfish, and a nesting haven for ducks, gulls, and swans. A sandy eastern shore backed by pine-covered dunes gives it an almost coastal feel, while the western side is edged by quiet residential areas.
