Rising 338 metres above the Macau waterfront, the Macau Tower is the city's most unmistakable landmark—a needle of glass and steel that you can spot from almost anywhere on the peninsula. Far more than a communications mast, it is a vertical playground: climb to an observation deck more than 200 metres up, step out into the open air, eat in the territory's only revolving restaurant, and—if you dare—launch yourself off the outer rim in a bungy jump that once set a world record. Tucked along the south side of Tap Seac Square in central Macau, the Youth Arts Pavilion is a charming 1925 heritage building that gives the city's young artists and performers a stage, a gallery wall, and a sense of creative possibility. Free to enter, this two-storey yellow-and-white villa is Macau's only dedicated venue for student and youth exhibitions and performances, housed in an eclectic blend of Portuguese and Art Nouveau architecture. Visitors can browse small-scale shows of student artwork, handcrafts, and collections on the ground floor, or catch an intimate drama, dance, or music performance upstairs. The venue is open Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 8 PM, closed Mondays, with no admission charge.

Ruins of Saint Paul's

The Ruins of Saint Paul's are Macau's defining landmark: a soaring granite wall standing alone at the head of a steep flight of stone steps, all that survived when a fire consumed the great Church of Mater Dei and the adjoining St. Paul's College in 1835. What looks, from a distance, like the front of a ruined cathedral is in fact the elaborate stone facade that once closed the building's front face—and behind it there is nothing but sky. That ghostly survivor, carved to fuse European Baroque design with Chinese and Japanese ornament, has become the symbol of a city built where two civilisations met. A visit is short but rarely shallow. The facade is open to view around the clock and the site is free, so you can climb the steps, stand beneath the carving, and read a monument that compresses the entire history of Sino-Portuguese Macau into five stacked levels of stone. Behind the wall lie the excavated foundations of the college, a crypt and the Museum of Sacred Art, while the lanes below—Na Tcha Temple, Monte Fort, the old city walls and the route down to Senado Square—make the ruins the centrepiece of one of Asia's most walkable heritage quarters.
