AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Tucked along the south side of Tap Seac Square in central Macau, the Youth Arts Pavilion is a charming 1925 heritage building that gives the city's young artists and performers a stage, a gallery wall, and a sense of creative possibility. Free to enter, this two-storey yellow-and-white villa is Macau's only dedicated venue for student and youth exhibitions and performances, housed in an eclectic blend of Portuguese and Art Nouveau architecture.↗↗↗
Visitors can browse small-scale shows of student artwork, handcrafts, and collections on the ground floor, or catch an intimate drama, dance, or music performance upstairs. The venue is open Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 8 PM, closed Mondays, with no admission charge.↗↗
A Century-Old Landmark
Built in December 1925, this two-storey building was originally the headquarters of the Caixa Escolar (助學會), a society dedicated to advancing education for Macanese children. Designed by Gaspar Borges, deputy director of Macau's Public Works Bureau, the building sits at the edge of what was then the Tap Seac sports field, aligned neatly with its perimeter. In 1992, the government listed it as a classified property — one of the very first buildings on Macau Peninsula to receive heritage protection for its architectural and artistic value. A thorough interior renovation in 2005 converted it into the youth arts venue it is today.
