Modern Art Gallery
High on Monte Titano, the Galleria Nazionale San Marino gathers the republic's state collection of modern and contemporary art — over 1,000 paintings, sculptures, works on paper, photographs, installations and artist's books — in the monumental Logge dei Volontari beside the Giardino dei Liburni. Far from a sleepy provincial cabinet, it tells the story of a tiny European micro-state that, from 1956, put itself squarely in the middle of the post-war art debate. The collection was born from the Republic's International Art Biennales, and the display unfolds across four thematic halls, from the trauma of the Second World War through the experimental languages of the 1960s to the return of painting. It also anchors a wider 'contemporary San Marino' trail of site-specific works scattered through the old town, making it the natural starting point for an art-focused afternoon in the historic centre.
