Hengchun Old Street
In the sun-baked far south of Pingtung, just a short drive north of Kenting's beaches, Hengchun Old Street is the living heart of one of Taiwan's best-preserved Qing-dynasty walled towns. Built in 1875 and still ringed by brick ramparts and four old city gates, the town's main lanes are now a busy thoroughfare lined with restaurants, food stalls and tiny shops—part historic quarter, part street-food playground. What makes it appealing is how easy everything sits here. The ancient walls you can actually walk up stand right beside the snack stalls; the prices are honest and the portions unpretentious; and on Sunday evenings the town transforms as its night market—one of the most old-fashioned in Taiwan—unfolds down the street. It's a slower, more local counterpoint to the resort energy of nearby Kenting.
