Lviv Historical Museum
Set in the resplendent Korniakt House at Rynok Square 6—the Renaissance townhouse that King Jan III Sobieski made his Lviv residence—the Lviv Historical Museum is one of Ukraine's oldest and richest museums. Its collections run to roughly 380,000 objects spanning municipal and guild history, arms and armour, coins, orders, rare books and the story of the city itself, but the experience here begins with the building: a 1580 palace of arcaded loggias, a forgotten Gothic hall, gilded Royal Halls and a courtyard so quiet and resonant that concerts are held in it. For a visitor already wandering Lviv's UNESCO-listed Market Square, this is the easiest and most rewarding way to understand how the city lived across five centuries—merchant princes, a Polish king, magnate families and, since 1908, the museum that grew out of their legacy.
