Nye Mountain
Nye Mountain (3,895 ft) is the 45th peak on the Adirondack High Peaks list, tucked in the Street Range west of Heart Lake near Lake Placid, New York. It's one of the few trailless summits on the 46ers roster—meaning the final approach follows unmarked herd paths through forest rather than a maintained trail. The reward is not a grand panorama from Nye itself but the adventure of the bushwhack-style route, the quiet birch meadows and brook crossings along the way, and the satisfaction of checking a box on one of America's most storied peak-bagging lists. Most hikers pair Nye with neighboring Street Mountain in a round trip of roughly 9 miles and about 2,700 feet of gain from the Adirondack Loj trailhead. The route traces remnants of a cross-country ski trail used during the 1932 Winter Olympics, crosses Indian Pass Brook, and climbs through old-growth forest to the wooded summit. Street, reached via a short side trip, offers a genuine viewpoint from a nearby rock outcrop.
