Cienega Picnic Area
Tucked about half a mile off the Sandia Crest Scenic Byway in New Mexico's Cibola National Forest, Cienega Picnic Area is one of the greenest corners of the Sandia Mountains east of Albuquerque. Its name, La Cienega, means 'wet meadow,' and that is exactly what you find: a flat, shady clearing wrapped in ponderosa pine and mixed conifer, with a stream running through the middle that draws birds, butterflies and other wildlife. It is a place that visitors keep describing with the same handful of words—shady, cool and green. The site works as both a picnic ground and a trailhead. Families and groups spread out among the dispersed picnic tables and grills, while hikers, horseback riders and mountain bikers set off along the trails that fan out into the Sandia Mountain Wilderness—most famously Cienega Canyon Trail #148, which climbs steeply through fir forest and wildflowers all the way to the crest. A paved, accessible interpretive trail winds right around the meadow, making the gentlest of visits rewarding too.
