Pedernales River
The Pedernales River at Naumanns Camp marks the point where this storied Hill Country waterway empties into the vast blue expanse of Lake Travis. After winding 106 miles eastward from spring-fed headwaters in Kimble County, carving over three-hundred-million-year-old limestone and past the ranch of President Lyndon B. Johnson, the river finally broadens and merges with the Colorado River reservoir. Here at the mouth, the landscape opens into calm, sun-dappled waterways that make the western Lake Travis shoreline one of the most scenic and peaceful corners of Central Texas. While the river itself carries enormous character along its full course, this particular stretch offers a quieter experience: Hill Country views, gentle currents where the river meets the lake, and the appeal of a low-key waterfront setting just a short drive from Austin's bustle. For travelers who want to understand the river's story, the best chapters unfold upstream at Pedernales Falls State Park and the LBJ National Historical Park, but standing at the mouth where everything converges — limestone geology, spring water, and the wide Colorado — gives a fitting conclusion to one of Texas's most emblematic waterways.
