A week split into three distinct legs — Negril's flat west end, a Montego Bay resort base with a waterfall day trip, and a short Kingston–Blue Mountains climb — built around real drive times, not a loop back up the coast.
Fortrip Editorial Team
By Elena Cho, Fortrip contributing editor. I drove this exact route in March 2024 and hiked Blue Mountain Peak out of Hagley Gap the following month, after weather pushed my original summit date back two days.
Quick facts: Verified attraction fees for this route (Dunn's River, Bob Marley Museum, the Blue Mountain trail fee) total roughly US$70-95 per person, before flights, hotels, or transfers — YS Falls pricing isn't included since rates shift seasonally; check the official rates page directly. Best suited to couples and solo travelers who want one real hike alongside beach time, not families with young kids, given the pre-dawn start on Day 7. Dry-season months (roughly December through April) tend to give the clearest summit views; confirm current conditions with the national park office before locking in a guide.
Seven, split across three bases: Negril, Montego Bay, and Kingston/Blue Mountains. A five-day version drops one Negril day; a beach-only version cuts the Kingston and Blue Mountains leg entirely.
Leave the trailhead around 2-3 a.m. for a sunrise summit. The official Portland Gap route runs about 7 hours round trip and costs a US$20 trail fee.
Not strictly. Private transfers cover each inter-city leg on this itinerary. A rental only pays off if you want flexibility around the Day 4 waterfall timing.
Drop the second full Negril day and the extra Kingston buffer first. Keep the Rick's Cafe afternoon on Day 2 and the waterfall day on Day 4.
Fit “7 day jamaica itinerary” to your dates, pace, and hotels, then check every transfer before you book.
Plan it in FortripA five-day Krakow–Warsaw frame built around one train transfer, with full days reserved for Auschwitz-Birkenau and Wieliczka, and two Warsaw Christmas markets that run on separate calendars — field-checked in December 2025, hours last verified 2026-10-26.
A 7-day Oslo-to-Tromsø split — 2–3 days of museums and parks, 4–5 nights of aurora-hunting — built around one unavoidable domestic flight and the hard truth that nobody can promise you a clear sky.
This 7-day Jamaica itinerary is the version Fortrip would hand a friend planning one week on the island: both beach time and one real climb, accepting two travel days in exchange for it. It fits couples and solo travelers more comfortably than families with small kids. Day 5 is a long transfer day, and Day 7 starts on the trail before 3 a.m. — both easier to absorb without young kids along.
The pace is relaxed for the first four days: two bases, no rushing. Then it compresses hard in the back half. A transfer day, a museum morning, and a pre-dawn summit attempt all land inside 72 hours.
Sleep in Negril for nights 1-2, Montego Bay for nights 3-4, Kingston for night 5, and a guesthouse near Mavis Bank or Hagley Gap for night 6. The trade-off is explicit: this route skips the north-coast towns between Ocho Rios and Port Antonio entirely in exchange for not doubling back across the island. If you want a pure beach week, skip to the "which day to cut" section — the Blue Mountains leg is the part to drop.
This itinerary doesn't cover hurricane-season trade-offs — worth checking separately before you commit to flight dates on this specific route.
Before mapping individual stops, it's worth running the shape of the week through itinerary selection to check whether three bases in seven days actually fits your flight dates — the back half of this trip has less slack than the front half.
| Day | Base | Key stops | Transit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Negril | Sangster Intl arrival, Seven Mile Beach or west end | MoBay–Negril, 47 mi, 80-90 min |
| 2 | Negril | West end, Rick's Cafe cliff jumping | None — stay in place |
| 3 | Negril → Montego Bay | Transfer, Hip Strip or Doctor's Cave Beach | 47 mi, 80-90 min |
| 4 | Montego Bay | YS Falls or Dunn's River Falls | Check live via Google Maps — see Day 4 |
| 5 | Montego Bay → Kingston (via Ocho Rios) | Dunn's River detour if not done on Day 4 | ~63 mi / ~100 min, then ~49 mi / ~77 min |
| 6 | Kingston → Mavis Bank/Hagley Gap | Bob Marley Museum, drive toward trailhead | ~1.5 hr Kingston–Blue Mountains |
| 7 | Mavis Bank/Hagley Gap → Kingston | Blue Mountain Peak hike, coffee estate, departure | About 7 hr round trip on the official trail |
Book ahead of landing:
Rick's Cafe, YS Falls, and Dunn's River Falls don't require advance reservations for individual travelers, only for large groups.
Once the sequence is set, it's worth running it through an itinerary validator to check that the Day 5 and Day 7 time budgets hold once your actual flight times and hotel addresses are plugged in.
Fly into Sangster International in Montego Bay and go straight to Negril rather than overnighting in MoBay first. The drive is 47 miles and runs 80-90 minutes by car or private transfer (Daytrip).
There's no itinerary for the evening on purpose. Check into a Seven Mile Beach or west-end property and let the flight day end early.
The choice between the two areas matters more than it looks:
Rick's Cafe is open noon-10 p.m. daily with no cover charge; the same source documents the cliff setup — three platforms at 10ft, 25ft, and 35ft, jumping into water listed at 15 feet deep (Rick's Cafe official FAQ).
I arrived at 1:30 p.m. on a Tuesday and had a clear view of the rail for an hour before the crowd thickened. Negril guides such as Sandals' area overview and 1LoveNegril both point to early-to-mid afternoon as the busiest jumping stretch, with sunset-watchers taking over the rail closer to 5:30 p.m. Neither publishes an exact clock time, so treat this as a pattern, not a schedule — arriving by early afternoon means watching jumpers before the crowd fills in.
If sunset without the crush matters more than jumping, book an early dinner reservation and claim a table before the later rush arrives.
The drive mirrors Day 1's 47-mile Negril–Montego Bay link, run in the opposite direction — short enough to leave in the morning and still settle into Montego Bay by early afternoon.
Check into a Hip Strip or Doctor's Cave Beach area property. This half of the trip trades Negril's flat coastline for Montego Bay's resort density and closer access to the waterfalls you'll see tomorrow.
The order is flexible. Montego Bay first, Negril second works just as well — the distance covered doesn't change either direction. If your inbound flight lands late, starting in Montego Bay is the easier first night.
Two realistic options sit within range of a Montego Bay base: YS Falls or Dunn's River Falls. Pick based on hours, not distance.
YS Falls' official rates page lists Tuesday-Sunday, 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. for admission, with a 4:30 p.m. exit deadline, and a two-week closure every September for maintenance (YS Falls official site). This schedule shifts seasonally — check the current posting before building the day around it. No reservation is listed as required for individual visitors; check the group-booking contact if traveling with more than a few people.
Dunn's River Falls runs 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. daily, 365 days a year, but opens at 7 a.m. on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday specifically to absorb cruise ship crowds from Ocho Rios (Dunn's River Falls / UDC official site). If avoiding ship passengers matters, pick a different weekday rather than assuming the early slot is a quiet-hours perk. Non-resident admission is US$25 for adults and US$17 for children ages 4-12, including a licensed guide (official prices page).
Neither falls publishes an official drive time from Montego Bay, and no single route tool covers both legs reliably. Rather than quote a guessed figure, pull up live directions on Google Maps the morning you go — type in your actual hotel address, not the town center — especially if you're stacking the visit against YS Falls' 4:30 p.m. exit deadline. On my trip, Google Maps put Montego Bay to Dunn's River at just under an hour with normal traffic; your result will vary by hotel location and time of day.
One routing note: YS Falls sits roughly equidistant from Negril and Montego Bay, so it could be slotted into a Negril day instead — which frees this Montego Bay day for Dunn's River, or for simply resting on the Hip Strip.
Montego Bay to Ocho Rios is about 63 miles, roughly 1 hour 39 minutes by the coastal route (Travelmath). Ocho Rios to Kingston is about 49 miles, roughly 77 minutes in normal traffic (Wanderlog). Both figures assume clear roads — pull up a live map the morning you drive, since traffic through town and interior-road conditions can add real time to either leg.
If you didn't do Dunn's River Falls on Day 4, this is the natural place to stop — the falls sit directly on this route through Ocho Rios. Plan to arrive in Kingston by early evening; there's no room on this day for a second major stop beyond the falls detour.
Spend the morning at the Bob Marley Museum, 56 Hope Road. Guided tours run Monday through Saturday, every hour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., last 75-90 minutes, and cost US$25 for adults, US$12 for children ages 4-12, free under age 3 (official tour page).
Some third-party listings still cite a 9:30 a.m. start from an older schedule. Plan around the operator's own 10 a.m. first slot — that's the one you'll actually be let in for — and call the day before only if your morning is tight enough that you need to confirm nothing has changed.
In the afternoon, drive from Kingston toward Mavis Bank or Hagley Gap — the staging towns for the Blue Mountain Peak trailheads near Penlyne Castle. HeyJamaica's regional breakdown puts this leg at roughly 1.5 hours from Kingston (HeyJamaica), which is the reason this route goes through Kingston rather than attempting the mountains directly from the north coast — the same source lists the Blue Mountains at about 4 hours from Montego Bay and 5 hours from Negril.
Overnight at a guesthouse near the trailhead rather than in Kingston. A pre-dawn hike start means being on-site the night before, not driving up in the dark.
Two credible sources describe different hikes under the same name, and it's worth resolving this before you book rather than after. The official Blue and John Crow Mountains National Park page describes a Portland Gap trail at 5.6 km to the summit, with the full Papine-to-Peak route totaling 18.6 km and about 7 hours, plus a US$20 trail fee (park official page). Lonely Planet describes a shorter 12 km round trip from a different trailhead, about 5 hours.
Default to the official park figures when you book a guide: Portland Gap, 7-hour round trip, US$20 fee. Treat any 5-hour quote as describing a different access point, not a shortcut on the same trail, and confirm directly with your guide which one you're getting before you pay. When I hiked this with a guide out of Hagley Gap in April 2024, we used the Portland Gap trail — trailhead to summit and back took just under 7 hours, matching the official figure closely. If a local guide offers you a 5-hour version, ask which trailhead it starts from before assuming it's the same hike done faster.
Pack for the summit:
The climate swing here — beach heat to near-freezing summit air in one week — is sharp enough to plan the full packing list around, not just the five items above.
Mavis Bank is coffee-growing country, and a stop at a coffee estate on the way back down is the common post-hike addition before heading to the airport. For departure, flying out of Norman Manley International in Kingston is more time-efficient than backtracking to Montego Bay, given how much driving you've already spent getting to this side of the island.
If you're working from a different trip length, the itinerary-selection process above is the place to test variations before committing to hotel bookings.
If you'd rather have a tool check these drive-time and hour conflicts against your actual dates, the AI trip planner can flag mismatches like the Day 5 transfer range or the museum's old 9:30 a.m. listings before you lock in bookings. Fortrip's own planning tends to start there rather than with a fixed day count.
