We booked a Deluxe Suite at Hotel La Luna, and it turned out to be quite an experience - in the best possible way. The building is old, and it certainly shows its age, but that is also what gives the hotel its unbeatable charm. Our suite had a ceiling height of around five metres, with a beautifully decorated ceiling featuring approximately 500-year-old frescoes. It was certainly not the most modern or luxurious room we have stayed in, but it was by far one of the most atmospheric and memorable. The location is excellent, right in the heart of Lucca’s historic centre. Getting there by car, however, is an adventure in itself. Our GPS quickly became confused by the many narrow one-way streets, and we eventually parked the car and continued on foot. At the hotel, we were told to drive against the traffic and through a pedestrian-only area to reach the hotel garage. The advice was essentially: if stopped by the police, just look like confused and lost tourists. We followed the instructions — and luckily, everything went perfectly! Our car eventually made it safely into the hotel’s small garage. Breakfast was nice and should satisfy most guests, although you can certainly find more extensive breakfast buffets elsewhere. The hotel itself was very clean, and our bathroom had a spa bath, which was a lovely extra. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Hotel La Luna may not be the most modern or fancy hotel we have stayed in, but taking the journey to get there, the historic setting, and our wonderfully atmospheric room into account, this will definitely count as one of our more memorable hotel stays.

Perfect location for exploring Lucca, and a good base for exploring further afield if itinerary allows. Very welcoming check in, rooms very clean, and decent expected breakfast options. Staff friendly and helpful as much as you need, and great restaurant opposite too.

Hotel in a great location in Lucca city centre. Rústic hotel but that’s not s bad thing. Bed was comfy, air conditioning worked and breakfast was standard and coffee was really good! If I was to come back to Lucca I would definitely stay here again.

Avoid at all cost!!! A very upsetting visit to Lucca. Stayed here recently and our belongings and car were held to ransom unless we paid additional costs. It felt as we were being blackmailed. The manager was threatening, abusive and very very rude, although he may have some mental health issues as his behavior was very strange . We are now taking action, to prevent this happening again as this is unacceptable. As such, we have made a formal complaint to booking.com and understand that hotel is now on their watch list. The visit was very upsetting and stressful and was not what we were expecting and we did not feel safe. The rooms were of a poor standard and some of the pictures on the website are very misleading as not even of this hotel.(stairs) If you are looking to stay in this lovely city then please look at other hotels as we are not the first guests to get caught from what we have read. We could not leave fast enough and managed to check in at alternative hotel in the town. Such a shame as totally ruined our stay in Lucca.

Stayed here in June. Clean, nice staff, great location. The restaurant across the courtyard is great. The location was easy to find our way back to after walking around all day. We loved Lucca overall and can't wait to go back!

This hotel engages in deceptive practices, intimidation, and abusive behavior. First incident: I booked, paid for, and received confirmation of a junior premium suite with balcony. On arrival, I was given a standard double room instead. When I raised the issue, management dismissed it with the response: “Look, you have a high ceiling.” Second incident (more serious): The hotel exploits a booking loophole. Unless every guest name is listed in your reservation, they falsely claim you owe an “extra bed fee” — even if you booked for two adults and two children. They allow you to check in, but later insist you leave your room and car keys at reception when going out. Upon return, you are denied access to both until you pay the sudden, unexpected charge. During this process, the manager was threatening, verbally abusive, and physically intimidating — shouting, throwing objects, storming off and back again. His behavior was unprofessional, offensive, and discriminatory, with several derogatory remarks made in both English and Italian. ⚠️ Final Recommendation: Hotel La Luna is well-practiced in these scams. For your safety, finances, and peace of mind, I strongly recommend avoiding this establishment altogether

Perfectly good midrange hotel with decent facilities and warm and quiet. Friendly english speaking staff, decent breakfast and 7 mins walk from bus stops to the north and south, both of which connect to the station. Location near amfiteatro so could not be more central. Looks a bit tatty on the outside and is perfectly good on the inside, which is typical of the whole of Italy. Definitely returning.

What a lovely hotel |Our room on 2 nd floor - steep stairs |Was large clean plenty of drawers and wardrobe space ( more hangers would be helpful) . We had safe hairdryer mini bar tv ( no English Chanel's ) few toiletries plenty of towels and hot water along with air con . This is a very old building with old style curtains/bedding & furniture. It's in keeping with the hotels age ( if you want bright modern place then it's not the hotel for you ) . We found it charming & we enjoyed it . The breakfast is what we have experienced in other Italian hotels & more than adequate. The staff are friendly & helpful . They arranged our taxi transfer to the airport . It's in a great spot to explore lucca 100 s of great places to eat and drink we didn't have a bad meal anywhere. Lovely one directly opposite the hotel & it's nice to sit outside the hotel on an evening. If you have mobility issues the steps are steep to the bedroom ask for 1 st floor & they will help with your luggage. I don't understand the bad reviews as long as you appreciate the age then I am sure you will embrace the charm . Lucca is easily walkable the city walls have plenty of trees for the shade . The station is not far to get to Pisa & beyond ( make sure you validate the ticket you buy at the green boxes at the stations) . We had a wonderful stay here & would repeat if in lucca again . If you get the opportunity to eat at osteria da Pasquale then go he is very enthusiastic about his food and wine - not overly expensive. Not far from the hotel - he gets booked up very quickly we tried without success from uk but walked around & asked he squeezed us in . We had a lovely night . We had it recommended to us .
