AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Liqeni i Panaritit is a small mountain swimming lake nestled in the village of Panarit, deep in the Vithkuq highlands of southeastern Albania's Korçë region. Sitting at over 1,200 meters elevation in terrain where the Osum river takes its source, this is a genuine local bathing hole — the kind of place known by word of mouth, untouched by tourism infrastructure, and surrounded by the same beech forests and clear streams that give this region its mineral-rich water.↗↗
For the intrepid traveler already exploring the Vithkuq mountain area and its remarkable cluster of Byzantine-era churches, a dip in this lake offers something the historic villages cannot: the simple, cold, crystalline pleasure of mountain swimming in a landscape that has barely changed in centuries.↗
A Village Steeped in History
Panarit itself is no ordinary mountain hamlet. This is the birthplace of Iljaz Hoxha, known to history as Iljaz Bej Mirahori — the 15th-century janissary who rose to become tutor to Ottoman Sultan Bayezid II and is credited with founding the city of Korçë. Born to the family of a village priest here, Iljaz left these mountains and reshaped the urban landscape of the Balkans. The lake sits in the same water system — the Panarit stream — that drains from the slopes around his native village.
