AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Schönberg im Stubaital is the small Tyrolean village that acts as the threshold to the Stubai Valley. Perched on a sunlit terrace about 1,000 metres above sea level, roughly twelve kilometres south of Innsbruck, it sits exactly where the rivers Ruetz and Sill meet—so the place looks one way into the glacier-capped Stubai and another down the Wipptal toward the Brenner. With only around a thousand residents and a tidy cluster of traditional inns, it feels like a genuine Alpine community rather than a resort, yet every major draw of the valley is minutes away.↗↗↗
What makes Schönberg surprising is the contrast crammed into a few square kilometres: a Rococo parish church and a 19th-century post-station heritage from the old Brenner route on one side, and two of Austria's boldest engineering landmarks—the soaring Europa Bridge and the elegant stone Stephansbrücke—on the other. Add a celebrated panorama from the hamlet of Gleins and easy trails onto the Hochserles shoulder beneath the Serles, and you have a quiet base that rewards both culture and outdoor days.↗↗
