AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Windang Beach is the southernmost beach in the Wollongong coastal chain, sitting at the dramatic entrance to Lake Illawarra about 15 kilometres south of Wollongong's city centre. With sweeping views of the Five Islands Nature Reserve offshore, a broad golden shoreline stretching over three and a half kilometres, and a lively foreshore park packed with family amenities, it has become one of the Illawarra's most beloved beach destinations.↗↗
What sets Windang apart is its dual personality: a proper ocean beach with surf breaks and swells, and a calm lake-side fishing and picnic spot, all in the same place. Whether you're after a dawn surf session, a family day with barbecues and playgrounds, or casting lines for bream at the lake entrance, Windang delivers.↗↗
The Beach and Its Views
Standing on Windang Beach, your eyes are immediately drawn westward to the Five Islands Nature Reserve—five small rocky islands strung along the horizon that give the coastline a distinctive character. The beach itself is long and broad, with golden sand backed by low coastal vegetation. On clear days the mountain backdrop of the Illawarra escarpment frames the scene to the west, while to the south the narrow channel of Lake Illawarra's entrance creates a natural boundary between ocean and estuary.
