AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Subida para chapada is a hiking route on the rural edge of Itapajé, in Ceará's interior, and its name tells you the whole story: it is the climb out of the valley town and up onto the surrounding chapada—that flat-topped plateau and escarpment of the sertão highlands that rings the city.↗
Itapajé sits about 130 km inland from Fortaleza, tucked into a valley boxed in by mountains. Hikers here use dirt tracks and trails to leave the heat of the lowlands behind and gain the cooler ridge tops, trading the town below for wide panoramas and the granite outcrops that give the region its character.↗
A Climb Out of the Valley
The appeal of the area is the ascent itself. Around Itapajé the land rises abruptly from the valley floor into a chain of serras and chapadas, and the local trails are defined by that gain in height. Routes in this landscape are known for long, steep climbs—often up rough, sun-exposed dirt roads and footpaths—that reward the effort with a view opening up the moment you reach the top. A reviewer of one nearby plateau trail put it simply: the climb is punishing, but the vista from the summit makes it worth every step.↗
