AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Solymar Beach is a wide, sandy stretch of the Paraná Atlantic coast in the quiet northern section of Matinhos, where a recent coastal revitalization project has dramatically expanded the beach and threaded a paved promenade and cycle path along its shoreline. Popular among families and surfers alike, it combines the serenity of a residential balneário with easy access to good waves and one of the coast's most celebrated seafood restaurants.↗↗↗
A Beach Reborn
For years the northern balneários of Matinhos saw the sea creeping toward their streets, eroding sand and threatening the waterfront avenue. Then came one of the largest coastal engineering projects ever undertaken on Paraná's shore: a roughly 6.3-kilometre beach nourishment and revitalization programme stretching from Morro do Boi in Caiobá up to Balneário Flórida. Solymar sits squarely within this newly reclaimed stretch.↗
The result is striking. Where the ocean once lapped almost directly against the promenade, visitors now walk across a broad expanse of fine beige sand before reaching the turquoise water. A dedicated cycle path, landscaped areas with native restinga vegetation, scenic lighting on the new coastal rock structures, and solar-powered street lamps line the entire stretch. The beach measures roughly 2.7 to 2.8 kilometres along Solymar's frontage and remains about 70 metres wide at high tide.
