AT A GLANCE
Why go?
The old headquarters of the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios de Pernambuco is a stately 19th-century palace on Praça da República in Recife's Santo Antônio neighborhood—one of the most historically concentrated squares in Brazil's Northeast. Inaugurated in 1880 as the home of an association of skilled artisans, the building is prized today for its French neoclassical façade and as a monument to the freed workers who built and were taught here.↗↗↗
It anchors the Praça da República historic ensemble, standing opposite the Teatro de Santa Isabel and the Palácio do Campo das Princesas, so it works beautifully as a single stop within a walkable loop of Recife's civic center. The building is heritage-listed and is currently undergoing a major restoration, which means visitors should expect an exterior, architectural visit rather than open interior access.↗↗↗
