AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Little Current River Provincial Park is not a park you drive up to and picnic beside. It is a 9,930-hectare ribbon of protected waterway running through the rugged northern boreal forest of Ontario, with no roads, no day-use facilities and no campgrounds in the usual sense. What it offers instead is exactly what a growing number of paddlers travel far to find: an unspoiled river corridor for serious backcountry canoeing and camping, reached only by floatplane or by a long paddle-in from the lake chain to the west.↗↗
Established as a waterway-class park in 1989 (the river was first set aside as a wild-river Crown Reserve back in 1975), it sits about 350 kilometres northeast of Thunder Bay and 100 kilometres north of Geraldton, in the remote Geraldton District. This is a destination for self-sufficient trippers who want solitude, wilderness water and good fishing far from the crowds of the more accessible Ontario parks.↗↗
