AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Santiago is Chile's capital and largest city, packed into a broad valley with the snow-streaked Andes rising to the east and the coastal range far to the west. Glittery towers and colonial plazas sit in the same view, and the whole metropolis is ringed by green hills you can climb for a panorama. It is a city best understood as a cluster of distinct neighborhoods, each with its own mood: a stately historic core, bohemian lanes full of cafés and murals, and an upscale glass-and-steel financial district nicknamed Sanhattan.↗↗
Two or three days lets you take in the founding plaza, the presidential palace, a couple of viewpoints and a long lunch in Lastarria or Bellavista; add more time and Santiago becomes the perfect base for Chile's wine valleys, high-Andes wilderness and even the Pacific coast, all within a day trip. With top-flight museums, a buzzing food and wine scene and mountains on the doorstep, the city that many once treated as a mere stopover has grown into one of South America's most rewarding capitals.↗↗
