AT A GLANCE
Why go?
The China Wu Culture Museum (中国吴文化博物馆) in Wuxi is the country's first museum devoted entirely to studying and presenting Wu culture — the civilisation of the ancient Wu and Yue states that flourished in the lower Yangtze during the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods. It forms the thematic heart of a larger complex, the Hongshan Site Museum · China Wu Culture Museum, where you can trace the whole sweep of local history from Neolithic river-delta villages to the bronze-age rivalries that made this region famous.↗↗
The site pairs two museums with a real archaeological location: the Wu Culture Museum for the broad story of Wu civilisation, the Hongshan Site Museum for the dazzling finds excavated from nearby noble tombs, and the original pit of Qiu Chengdun, a grand Warring States aristocrat's grave you can stand and look down into. Opened to the public in September 2008 across some 10,000 square metres, the complex is widely regarded as one of the best-designed relic-site museums in southern China — and, best of all, admission is free.↗↗↗
