AT A GLANCE
Why go?
The Geschichtsmeile Wilhelmstraße—"Wilhelmstraße History Mile"—is an open-air street exhibition that turns one long Berlin avenue into a walk-through timeline of the German government district. Spread along Wilhelmstraße near the former Reich Chancellery, its bilingual information boards mark the sites where Prussian and German ministries, embassies and, later, Nazi terror headquarters once stood. Most of those buildings are gone; the steles reconstruct their history in photographs and text, so the street itself becomes the exhibit.↗↗
Run by the Stiftung Topographie des Terrors as its second permanent exhibition, the mile is free, always accessible outdoors, and designed for self-guided walking. It pairs naturally with the nearby Topographie des Terrors documentation center and the longest surviving stretch of the Berlin Wall in central Berlin, making this corner of the city one of the densest concentrations of 20th-century memory in Europe.↗↗
